A Good Option In San Diego

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Apr 25, 2024via mobile
Overall, we liked this hotel. In a good location just off the busiest streets of the Gaslamp area, it has old world charm, was clean and was generally quiet.

We had (inadvertently!) booked a really large suite, with lovely furnishings and a balcony. The latter was probably overstated as it was minuscule and only one person could stand on it at a time!

However, for all the space, most seemed wasted. There was no desk or table near power points to enable a workspace. The kitchenette had no plates or bowls. Plus, all the cups were paper and wrapped in plastic. No wine glasses either. Were they worried about the cockroaches? We killed three the first night but saw none after that.

Nor were there safes in rooms. You needed to have your valuables locked away at reception.

The bed was super comfy and there were gowns.

Special mention to the lady originally from Fiji on reception - she was lovely and helpful.

Also a tip. Put the ‘do not disturb’ sign on the door. Otherwise the very enthusiastic cleaning team start trying to come in do their job before 9am!

The hotel is well located in Gaslamp District, so there are many places for eating and drinking nearby. The initial rates to book a room look relatively inexpensive. But the additional fees add at least 25% to the cost. And then there is parking: Valet only at $59 per night. HORRIFIC. The most we have ever paid, anywhere in the world to park a car. And at that price, the valet service should be swift and efficient. NOPE. Slow, slow, wait and wait.
The room was spacious and clean. The mattress was comfortable, although the bed is very tall, and you almost need a step stool to get up into the bed.
But the room was run of the mill for for much money.
We would not stay here again.

Dear Valued Guest,
We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the valet service at our property. We understand that rising parking costs are a hot button issue for everyone coming to the downtown area of San Diego. I can assure you that we are still one of the most reasonably priced hotels in San Diego for valet parking, and considerably less expensive that other downtown markets such as Los Angeles or San Francisco. Hopefully in the future you can find parking alternatives to alleviate any valet issues.
Thank you,
Todd Husted

The bed was so comfortable and the employees were so welcoming! I loved the elevator with the vintage artifacts on display as you go up!

The hotel boasts short walking distances to many restaurants and convenient proximity to Petco Park for events.

The staff, especially Concierge Todd, are excellent. The vintage decor and rich history add to its charm.

However, the only drawback is the consistently low water pressure, which persists regardless of the time of day, which is somewhat perplexing.

The Horton Grand was a beautiful hotel for our stay in San Diego. The level of customer service was exceptional. Victor from the hotel was very helpful in providing local information, as we were visiting from Hawaii. The front desk staff went above and beyond. The Horton Grand is in the perfect location for local food, drinks, nightlife in the Gas Lamp District.

Staying here at Horton Grand Hotel was a wonderful experience! The staff was all excellent! Helpful with recommendations on things to see in the area. The restaurant Salt & Whiskey is a good place to eat, also very friendly staff.
The hotel has history with a pretty cool story. They have done a wonderful job keeping the architecture original, without the musty smells that can go along with these types of buildings. This was the first thing I noticed, the nice smell!
The room was very clean!
Victor and Marjorie were extremely friendly and helpful, made our visit! Thank You
