“Not a bad place to crash”
Reviewed 19 January 2010

Stayed at the Vanderbilt YMCA for three nights following a business trip. As I just needed a place to crash for the weekend, the $63 rate was too hard to pass up, especially considering most hotels in midtown were going for $400+.

The rooms are definitely snug with a twin bed, dresser, mirror, fridge, small closet, and 15" TV. The worst part was the radiator making an incessant clanging noise throughout the night. Free WiFi if you get a code from the front desk. The bathrooms aren't too bad, but the one shower room can get a bit of a wait, but, if you're in a hurry, you can shower in the gym in the basement, or the men's restrooms have two showerheads in a room just off the bathrooms.

Overall, not bad...but if you can snag a 'normal' hotel on Priceline for a few bucks more, it's probably worth it.

Stayed at one of the single rooms, the room was clean but small with a tiny window. Shared bathrooms were mostly clean although a bit drafty. I didn't deal with many staff members but the reception was friendly and helpful.

The Y has a laundry room on site which is great if you're staying for awhile. Just make sure you have quarters as there were no change machines. The free wifi was fast and the gym was very well equipped although it gets crowded on weekends.

Security was very good for a budget hotel and the location is great. I usually stay on the west side but I loved the Y.

I was in this hotel for 5 nights.
The location is great, quite central making it easy to travel anywhere in manhattan, many places even possible to visit on foot if u like to enjoy the street.
The rooms are small and you have to share restrooms with other costumers but the price is quite cheap wich i think made for it, and if you are there to enjoy the city and not the hotel, it doesnt matter.
Only real downside was my window having a glass broken but thankfully was just a small opening and the heating was working fine and made up for it.
If you look for the same as me then I definitly recommend it.

I stayed here for five nights over Christmas. I have to say my heart sank on seeing the room - they seem to have done everything possible to make it look bare and bleak: lino floor rather than carpet, blinds rather than curtains, wire shelves rather than wood, cold fluorscent lighting.

But once you get used to that, the room is perfectly comfortable, clean and functional, and if you're just on a city break and not in the room very much, it's fine. The hotel was quite busy but I didn't get any noise from my neighbours, and felt totally safe.

The rooms are cleaned and your towels replaced every day. The shared bathrooms are spacious and clean and in decent condition. There was no sink in the room which was a bit annoying, though there was a TV and, bizarrely, a fridge.

One really good thing is that you get free use of the YMCA gym, which is pretty high-tech. There's also free wireless, although you have to ask reception for the password every day.

This is a basic hotel, but if your needs are basic, it fulfils them at (for New York) a decent price.

I stayed 5 days at the YMCA Vandebilt and although the rooms are small, this is a great place to stay for a budget traveller. I booked room at US$65 a night (a bargain) - YMCA is a charity for you don't have to pay the 14.5% state tax on top of the room rate. The location is great, 10 minute walk from Grand Central Station, right in middle of Manhattan (15 minute walk to Times Square and near other attractions. I got the airport shuttle bus from JFK to Grand Central for $15 oneway and saved $$$ on airport taxis. YMCA Vanderbilt has a front security desk 24 hours, 2 lifts to the rooms (I stayed on Level 5), level 3 has self laundry room (bring quarters). The room is basic but has all the necessities - single bed, a small desk, mini fridge, TV, heating, cupboard to hang clothes (very basic). The floor in the rooms is vinyl whilst the corridor is carpet. The shared toilets/showers are adequate (similar to say that of your local gym) - I used the disabled showers which are private. There is a huge gym and swimming pool but I spent 5 days exploring NYC so didn't use these. Overall if you want a place to just to stay in NYC for sightseeing and are on a budget, I highly recommend YMCA Vanderbilt.

This place is a great bargain. I spent 69.00 for a single room with fridge desk and TV. The room was small but clean.. Everything seemed to be freshly painted. Bathroom and showers down the hall--they were adequate..not great. The front desk was super friendly and helpful. You can book your shuttle transportation to the airport here too! Place was full of travelers of all ages and from all over the world. I would definitely stay here again if travelling on a budget.
