“A good average hotel”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 March 2012

Its true that the price of this hotel makes it very attractive. For that reason I chose it for a recent business trip and it was indeed perfectly located for my needs. The hotel has a wonderful New York charm about it which initially endeared me to the place, but after a few days the charm wore off. The room was small but by no means was that a concern for me, it had everything I needed so it worked out great. I had a great room with a view, positioned right on the corner of w22nd Street and 8th Avenue on the fourth floor. The only problem is that in the 'city that never sleeps' with that room it meant that you will never sleep too. Fire engines, police cars, crowds of people, street sweepers, all going throughout the night right passed your head. The bathroom was great, again, wonderful new york charm and had everything I needed. The only 'complaint' I have was that the room was always cold. It was like the walls and windows were there just for display rather than function. I'd imagine that would be great but I was there during some particularly chilly nights. The heater was adequate however, its just a shame the room was so cold. The hotel is perfectly positioned in Chelsea, and with no breakfast on offer you have the most amazing bagel bakery right across the block to indulge in. Overall nothing really wrong with the place and I would probably tell people about it, along with my views of the 'charm'. A good average hotel

Room Tip: There are plenty of rooms without a street view. As unexciting as it sounds, if you're a light s...

Thank you for your informative review of the hotel. We value your input because it gives everyone at the Gem a foundation to build upon to make your next visit more comfortable and smooth. On your next visit I would recommended staying in one of your Business class room that has a view of 22nd st which is much more calm and quite compared to 8th avenue. The road to excellence would never be reached without guest such as yourself to guide us in the right direction.

The hotel is set in a great location, we walked everywhere from here. On our arrival the receptionist was so accommodating, and we were checked in within five minutes. Our room was small but had a great outlook over the street and was very clean - which was our main priority. It had everything we needed including coffee making facilities and free wifi. Nothing was too much for the staff from looking up opening times of various attractions to booking us a car back to the airport, which was cheaper than a taxi. We would definitely not hesitate to book this hotel again on our return to New York

The room was ridiculously small, but it IS NYC. It was a great location, and the people were nice and knowledgeable of the area. I'll try another GEM hotel before I go back to this one.

Greetings YourNextGuest,

Thank you so much for your review and we are glad we were able to be of your service. One downside of it though is that I wish I was able to make your stay perfect as we always intend to do with everyone that stays with us.

Although our rooms are on the smaller end with the NYC scale, I want to assure you that we will be able to top that flaw off with our service. Throughout the past year, we have undergone many changes and I hope you can give us another visit so that we can make your stay more memorable than it was previously.

Please let me know if you would be kind enough to return us a visit, and if you would please contact us back at chelsea.fom@thegemhotel.com

Thank you.

Warm regards,

Eric Kwon

The Gem Hotel Chelsea, always be my first choice, when i go to New York. The hotel is execellent, because the hotel was in a great location with lots of good restaurants , bars and delis nearby. The neighbourhood are not very touristc area, and it's great to seems maybe for a few days a local. The room are smal, but if you are in New York, you problaby walk all day long, and doesn´t matter the size of the room. the only thing i didn't like is the mattress, not so good, can be like these one with memory foam mattress.
The rooftop deck was very, very cool. The shower was great and always when i come back to the room the cleanness was perfect. The staff are very helpfull. So i love this Hotel.

Nice, clean rooms right in the middle of Chelsea. Great location. Rooms were typical size for NYC, everything was clean and free wifi was a plus. Great place to stay

Everything about this charming hotel was good. No real negative comments. Only if you need a big room no need to come here. There's also no breakfast, but plenty of opportunities in the neighbourhood. If you don't like the idea of being in the middle of the LGBT Chelsea-district in an hotel that really supports the community you don't have to book. The WIFI i my room was weak and the coffeepads in the room could also be stonger and tastier. I dicovered the hotel in the Flemish newspaper De Standaard beginning of Jan 2012. Good recommendation.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view. My view was a wall.

This recently renovated hotel has nice staff and a very nicely done lobby. The hotel room was easily the smallest hotel room in which I have ever stayed. It was almost two small for the two of us. The bathroom is up to date and an efficient use of space. The room was very clean. The window faced the other rooms across the building, so the tiny room felt even smaller due to the lack of light. Would I stay there again? Yes, if there was nothing else around at a reasonable price.

Thank you so much for your review. We apprecciate you sharing your experience with us as we are always looking for ways to improve. As for your need for space, I would like to suggest our penthouse suite on your next visit. The penthouse suite is about 20-40 square feet larger than our standard rooms and it also features its own private terrace with incredible views of the empire state building and the west side of Manhattan. The Penthouse is also on it's own floor apart from all of the other rooms in our hotel. Please feel free to contact me on your next visit to NYC as I'd love to assist in welcoming you back to the city. We look forward to hearing from you and we hope you have a wonderful day!
