Beat the queue for the statue of liberty and catch the ferry.. It goes very close and you get a perfect view without waiting in a massive line first to get on a tour boat then the amount of people on the island is crazy..

We had a few hours to spare so had been told about the ferry and it being free so felt we didn’t have anything to lose.

Straight through and onto the ferry. It was pouring with rain and misty so the views of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island weren’t great but that couldn’t be helped.

Spent 30 minutes or so on Staten Island but the rain stopped us from venturing outside the terminal building before getting the ferry back again.

It's free which puts at least 2 stars on the review before we even start. A great place to see the statue of liberty for free with great views when you sail past unless it was foggy like when we went. The queues are big to get on but the ferries are massive so hold loads so expect to get on and with plenty of seats and even a cafe you don't have to rush unless you want to see the statue of liberty then there is limited viewing. We had an open ferry on the way there that was best for photos but a closed one on the way back which although was warmer wasn't great for photos. The ferry take approx 10 mins to cross and they go every 30 mins at peak times. Free WIFI in the ports if you miss a ferry with toilets and plenty of cafes. The port is located on the south side of Manhattan with the closest subway being Whitehall Street, yellow line, or Bowling Green, green line.
