“Comfortable stay, excellent service”
Reviewed 2 May 2012

Sofitel Hotels offer the atmosphere I like with comfortable and spacious rooms, and excellent service. This Sofitel in NY is very well located in the center of midtown manhattan within walking distance of a lot, and if you would need to travel downtown or more uptown without taking a taxi, choices for several subway lines close by.

I have been thinking of three special compliments and two suggestions. Here they are.

Special compliments:
1. The shower. I like it when a hotel room has a shower separate from the bath and I like it a lot when the shower is a rain shower.
2. Complimentary bottles of water every day. The dry air in the room really requires you to keep on drinking water. These really helped making our stay more comfortable.
3. Bose sound system ready to use for iPod/iPhone plug-in.

Suggestions:
1. Rooms offer free wifi, but at a speed of only 252kb. Broadband is available at a price of 17USD per day. A speed of 252kb is ancient. I Think a hotel like this at these rates should offer complementary broadband wifi.
2. The minibar could you some wine.
3. The need to login to wifi every day during your stay is a bit of annoying. This could be better.

Room Tip: Lower level rooms do not have a view. Kingsize beds sleep very comfortable.

My wife and I visited New York on our honeymoon in August 2011. After much research, we decided to stay at the Sofitel. When we arrived, we were not disappointed. The staff were courteous and friendly from the beginning. We were upgraded to a better room free of charge. Whenever we needed directions or advice about a restaurant, the staff were always willing to help. They made us feel very special indeed!

Our room itself was great. It had all we needed. The shower/bathroom were great and very clean and tidy. The room was lovely and spacious. The cleaning staff were also very friendly and we regularly had our basic toiletries replenished.

The best thing about this hotel was the location. I felt as though we were right in the middle of all the hot spots that Manhattan has to offer. We walked to times square, the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Centre, Central Park, Grand Central Terminal, just to name a few. This hotel is also right next to 5th Avenue for all the best shops. Macys is also not far away.

I have to say that staying in the Sofitel was a dream come true. My wife and I are already planning our next trip to New York for Summer 2013. I just hope we can stay at the Sofitel again.

This is the second time we have stayed at the hotel in the past 12 months. The staff were friendly and efficient. As we stayed with our son it was nice that a rollaway was able to be put in the room. Perhaps for our next trip we could have a room on the north side as the rooms on the south side below the 15th floor do not have much of a view. This, however, was not a major point. The location is excellent. We would definitely stay here again. The Sofitel chain is a very good, upscale chain.

This was the third time we have stayed here on business. The hotel is just right, not too big, not too small.
Very helpful attendive staff, difficult to fault...

Room Tip: ask for 14th floor and above

Elegance and sophistication in a great location sums up this hotel. However, there are some annoying drawbacks to the elegance. If you plan to nap, be sure to set a wake-up alarm. The bed is so comfortable you might sleep longer than you planned. However, the pillows are not firm and you may need several. If you are on a business trip and need to work all night, forget about free coffee in the room or even in the lobby, you will need to order room service. However, coffee is available in the lobby from 6AM until the restaurant opens. If your suit arrives wrinkled, forget about steamming it out with the shower. In this beautiful and elegant bathroom, there is no place to hang it. You will have to iron it or wait for the pressing service. Of course, there is no free wifi. You will need to purchase it. There is no breakfast buffet; but the breakfasts are great. Eggs Benedict with smoked salamon and Eggs Florentine with portabello mushrooms, all served with a large basket of assorted breads and croissants, juice and coffee. The lobby is very conducive to meeting friends, working or just relaxing after a long walk through this wonderful part of Manhattan.

First, the positives: one of the best locations in Manhattan, close to everything. Especially if you're going to see Broadway shows; we walked to several in minutes.

Service is mostly good. Housekeeping and room service attentive and polite; front desk very good. One experience with concierge not pleasant. Asked for a Wall Street Journal; he somewhat rudely asked me if I was a guest at the hotel (as if I would walk off the street and ask him for a newspaper (?); then he said he'd check and send one up to the room. He never did, nor call.

The lobby is definitely faded glory. Older people (tourists and a lot of French people, given the Accor ownership) everywhere; nothing wrong with that of course, but hip this hotel is decidedly not. Not in any way whatsoever. As long as you're okay with a stuffy place that is not cool at all, you'll be fine.

What really makes this property lose a star is an internet policy where the executives at this chain tried to compromise between good customer relations and profit - but failed in both categories, and irritates the heck out of me, and I'm sure many others.

Specifically, I refer to the "metered internet access", in which they do allow wi-fi access to all of the guests, but at turtle-slow pace. "To check your email only" said the front desk clerk. Of course for $20 a day (!), you have the ability to get regular-speed internet.

This is folly on every level. Offering snail's pace internet to guests is infuriating to anyone who needs to use the internet and has to spend three times as long waiting for pages to load.

The problem is - who is going to pay $20 when you do have internet? You feel like a sucker to do that.

So Sofitel doesn't make any money, yet they infuriate me because they've intentionally throttled back internet speeds just to make money. Ironic, and stupid - and for $300/nt, they (and for that matter every hotel) needs to give this amenity away. It's just a matter of time, and I feel it's the equivalent of charging for bath towels 100 years ago. Give up, already, folks, and let your guests have the internet!

Dear Guest,
Thank you for taking the time to write about your recent stay at Sofitel New York. We are sincerely sorry that your visit did not reflect the high standards that we set for our hotel. Our goal is to always exceed our guests’ expectations. We value your comments and we will take whatever steps we can to correct the problem.
We regret that you didn’t appreciate the internet offer we have in our hotel, where you have a free service and a premium paid service. I can guarantee you that this is an advantage that we have against our competitors where the majority doesn’t offer any free service, and in terms of paid service we believe we have a competitive offer in the NY market, nevertheless we take good note of your point and we will consider your comment in future decisions.
We apologize for the inattentive service you received from our concierge. We strive for the highest level of professionalism. While that individual does not reflect our philosophy or the way we train our staff, we are very concerned that you did not receive the exemplary service you deserve. I have requested that our head of human resources institute a review of our training procedures.
Again, please accept our apologies, we are very pleased that you enjoy our service in general and the recognition you make on your post.
We hope that you will consider staying at Sofitel New York again so that we may show you the gracious hospitality and superb service for which we are known around the world.
Sincerely,

Jorge Tito
