“bad service!”
Reviewed 8 April 2012

its a very nice hotel, the rooms are spacious and very comfy, though the service was so bad, it took us 30 minutes to check in, and the reception desk employees were so laid back! too bad for such a great location!

Had beautiful Edwardian suite to sharewith my mom for her birthday with partial park view - king size bed in bedroom and a rollaway in the living room that was actually wonderful. The room was over 1000 sf and the bathroom was gorgeous with separate entries to beautiful shower stall and toilet. The dressing and bath area were large and lovely - tiles were elegant. Concierge service excellent. Bar drinks ridiculously expensive even for New York. But the room price for space and glamour beat other comparable properties. Beware, not a get away from it all hotel. Not low key. Not boutique hotel ambiance. Hustle and bustle with tour groups winding around the Palm Court dining room while we were having lunch because it is that grand and pretty.

Thank you for taking the time to post your positive feedback on your recent stay. We are very proud of the exceptional room product we offer - our suites are among the largest in New York City and our bathrooms are truly spectacular. The entrance of the hotel is a bit busier than most being that we are a New York City landmark, however we are glad that you weren't inconvenienced and are understanding of our unique situation. We will share your review with our hotel team-- we all hope that you will come back and stay with us again soon!

We just stayed at The Plaza for three nights. The hotel is opulent and the sevice stellar. We got a free upgrade to a Rose Suite for beiing Fairmont Presiedent Club memebers.I highly recommend doing this before you go.The membership is free.

The Palm Court is wonderful! We enjoyed breakfast everyday.

It is right across tne rosd from FAO Schwarz and the Apple store. They have house cars - BMW - which takes you to shows and dinner within 12 miles.

One caveat- the fitness club has pool which charges 50$ for a half day and 100$ for full day?!? I have nevef had to pay to swim in a hotel where I was paying almost 1000 $ night.
Theynalso charge 75 $ for a rollaway bed per night.

Despite it I would stay here again.

I brought my wife to NYC for her birthday and surprised her with a stay at the Plaza. It was the first visit for both of us, so all we knew about the place was based on Home Alone, episodes of Seinfeld, and the like. Check in was smooth, and we were on our way to the room within minutes.

-The Room

The room was an average sized hotel room, but the bathroom was huge. The room controls and other features controlled by the iPad were a nice gimmick, but the proprietary interface was slow and frustrating at times. Our room faced 58th street, so we had no view to speak of. The TV is a bit small for the distance from the bed, but it was tolerable. The bathroom was well appointed, but it took a while to find the single power outlet (it was hidden behind the bagged hair dryer). The TP was surprisingly single ply.

-Food and Drinks

We enjoyed breakfast at the Palm Court each morning (thanks to American Express), which included a variety of pastries, bagels, fruits, meat, cheeses, well you know what continental breakfast is. The coffee was quite good. We also had lunch there one afternoon when we were in a bit of a rush and didn't care to look around for anything. The burger and the chicken club were quite good, but also rather expensive. However, the Amex food and beverage credit made it reasonable. Soft drinks are served from 8.5 oz aluminum bottles, so we're not sure if they included refills. Iced tea flowed freely. We had drinks at the Champagne bar one evening, which was expensive even by NYC standards.

-Service

The service overall was fine. Nothing spectacular, but certainly took care of everything we needed them for. Ordering ice to be delivered by a butler seems like an unnecessarily complicated process, but I eventually got my ice. It was delivered in an un-insulated metal can, so do not expect it to stick around long.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay at the Plaza, and do not have any serious complaints. As may be gleaned from my review, we do not usually stay at hotels like this.

My daughter had wanted to have afternoon tea at the Plaza (in the Palm Court) for years. We went this year in March and were treated like royalty (for a price). We got dressed up and made it a real occasion. The new ceiling is beautiful, the chandeliers sparkle, and the service is top notch.
Afterwards we took photos of ourselves with the huge photos of stars who have visited in the past: Marilyn Monroe, the Beatles, Brigitte Bardot and others.

We stayed there last week - a fairly good rate given the reputation of the hotel, but still pricey. We received an AMEX upgrade to a suite, which was fine until the middle of the night when the air conditioning started to pound. This was loud, like someone trying to ax their way into the room. I called the operator, but did not want an engineer in the room at 1 am, so we endured with the promise that it would be corrected the next day. Of course, you know what happened - no one came to fix it. All was quiet until the middle of the night, then it started again. The next day, we asked to switch rooms after the engineer said that it was air in the pipes that would take half a day to correct. Unfortunately, the suites like ours had been taken so we were moved to another floor, where the roof caused the room to have an unusual configuration. It was larger than the first, but dark and less inviting. My real complaint is the service of the hotel with a couple of exceptions. The check-in was nice and Waheed, the bellman, was very helpful during our stay. However, room service was terrible. For a $100 continental breakfast for two, you would think that they would set up the tables for you and act happy about their included gratuity. However, they were surly and seemed to think that I was doing them a favor. Also, one would expect the danishes/croissants to be warm at that price - not at the Plaza where they were cold despite us requesting them to be hot after the first day. Additionally, the doormen were among the worst that I have ever seen in Manhattan. NOT ONCE, did they open the door or operate the revolving door for me or my family. When we arrived, the driver had to yell at them to get their attention for the bags. They just were not as friendly and professional as one would expect.
I have stayed at the Plaza before, prior to the remodel, and can honestly say that it is a beautiful property. However, my recent stays at the St Regis and particularly, The Pierre, were better because of the service. The Plaza just didn't perform in that area, and I wouldn't return as a result.

We had the good fortune to stay in the Edwardian Suite. Having just returned two weeks ago I can highly recommend the location. Overlooking Central Park with great views up the West Side a lovely side window the suite was light filled and SO quiet for a hotel smack bank in the middle of NYC, and trust me, we are light sleepers. I had to move rooms at The Palace Hotel due to street noise so I was delighted with the lack of noise.

The suite was well proportioned and designed. Lovely linen, furniture and great to have a second WC removed from the main part of the living areas. The double wardrobe was a great feature too (his and hers).

Couple of minor gripes;
-Only one small water each in the room despite asking for more (at $1000 + a night) we thought that was a little stingy
-Being charged for internet access at $15pd in this day and age...I mean Wi-Fi is free at McDonalds and Starbucks!
-There is no 'door man' and the revolving door is a little shabby and beaten up
-Way to much pigeon poo all over the front of the hotel...gross and not very 5 star (get out the scrubbing brush guys)
-The 'red carpet' is threadbare in places and the paint needs touching up in the foyer.
-Leave a lady a tea bag! I asked for a few and a kettle as there was a kitchen in the suite and I like a herbal tea before bed (and I don't like waiting for room service to make me one). I had a couple but housekeeping removed them and then I was charged $30 for a cup of tea! After just leaving the Four Seasons in HK that has EVERYTHING, including a Nescafe machine in your room it was feast to famine!
Overall the staff were great, concierge very good and suggesting restaurants and the hotel town car, although not the Roller I was expecting after reading other reviews was very handy. Would stay there again but it was still missing that attention to detail that places like Le Bristol in Paris and the service that The Four Seasons in HK have mastered.

Room Tip: The Edwardian Suite has a lovely view of the park
