Pros:
~Ideal for cruise passengers -- location was a $6.50/5 minute taxi ride from the Manhattan Cruise Terminal. (2012).
~Good location within walking distance of the theater district, Times Square, Columbus Circle, Central Park, Hell's Kitchen, Rockerfeller Center, etc.etc.
~5 - 7 minute walk to the nearest subway station.
~Fast check-in
~Spacious clean room and bathroom (Note: We were given an ADA room)
~Modern decor
~Quiet (except when guests decided to yell in the hallway, not the hotel's fault).
~Concierge desk available to help with airport shuttle arrangements or shows.
~The lobby bar was lively most evenings.
~Rooftop bar and pool available. (Note: I believe they open it to the public as well as hotel guests, so it was rather crowded in the height of summer).

Cons:
~Breakfast not included. There are several nearby cafe style places to eat breakfast or the hotel restaurant.
~No particular 'view' from our room, but that didn't bother us.
~Little bit of a wait at the concierge desk -- he could do with extra help.

We booked this hotel on one of those websites where you don't know the name of the hotel before you book, only the price and the neighborhood. Considering that, we were very happy with this hotel and it's location for $150/night. It was particularly convenient for us being cruise passengers, as it was only a $6.50/5 minute cab ride from the cruise terminal to this hotel after our cruise. It was also very convenient to the Lincoln Center where we had tickets to Warhorse one evening.

Room Tip: We asked not to be near the ice-machine.

With New York hotel horror stories and absurd pricing always staring you in the face, it was with welcome relief that we discovered this oasis of sanity. A no frills (and reasonably priced) alternative, the Holiday Inn Midtown proved to be a great choice.

Conveniently located on West 57th street, it is far enough away from Times Square to be able to escape while still within easy reach when seeking. Several subway & bus options were nearby (within 2 blocks) for going North or South and it’s right on the cross town bus route going East & West. Nice walk to Central Park, Madison Ave. etc. We bought a 7 day NY Transit pass that proved to be a good buy and precluded having to do the tourist fumble at the ticket machines during rush hour. Also works on the bus routes. In 3 days of going from Coney Island to Central Park and all in between, never took a cab.

The décor of the lobby is straight forward, with no frills for which you are paying but not using. Very reasonable full service restaurant and lobby bar in the hotel. Lobby security was tight and efficient. Rooms were average and clean. Would have been nice to have had a fridge. The hotel's owner is Joe and could usually be found on site at the rooftop pool, in the lobby, or in his office window above the entrance. By the end of the stay, he knew our names (How many NY hotels can you say that about). A fun guy to be around, his presence was energetic, noticeable and reflected in the staff.

A couple of food tips: There is a full line grocery store up 57th at about Broadway called Morton Williams. Along with the usual grocery and beverage items, they have a large Whole Foods style deli section with sandwiches and salads. Think ready-to-go picnic in Central Park or take back to the room. A major find! Also, for informal and reasonable dining, try Route 66 at 9th & 55th West.

All in all, we rate as 'Very Good' based not on being high end, but on being a great mid-level option for staying in Manhatten. RECOMMENDED.

Pretty much what you'd expect from a Holiday Inn, large clean rooms, free wireless (unlike more expensive chains this is included in the room price and didn't appear to be capped or filtered), clean towels, and so on. The only downside was the limited capacity of the elevators, during the morning rush (8am to about 10am) they couldn't handle the numbers of people leaving, so the full elevators would stop on every floor with the people both inside and outside looking frustrated before the doors closed again and they continued to the next floor down where the same thing would repeat. This made getting out in the mornings quite annoying, but apart from that there's nothing much to complain about.

I like holiday inns as all chains you know what your going to get for your monies. I don't find the taxis to costly in NY, so if you find you have walked to far and have to much shopping the location doesn't mater in NY I would go back to the hotel again the room was clean sheets/towels fresh all the staff where friendly

Large and clean room with nice beds (checked for bed bugs but no sign). Bathroom in need of renovation though - especially the plumbing: toilet was nearly impossible to flush and the shower tricky to adjust. Stayed there 4 nights in April and the room was quite cold - had to sleep with a thick sweater on. The location is great though - just a few minutes walk from Central Park, Times Square, subway... Helpful staff. Overall, I'd stay there again.

Room Tip: Check the plumbing!

The room stink and the clim didn't work hard enough...so it makes the room very humid. They need to do a good clean up because the were old dust behind the furniture and in the bathroom. Also it was impossible for the kid to flush down the toilet... We reserved for 4 persons and every day I had to call to have 4 towels. The only good thing...pool and location. The breakfast was uneatable...kids didn't like it at all. Not expensive.

Room Tip: Call the hotel directly because that way, you can cancel if your disapointed.

The hotel was walking distance to Central Park and Times Square which was very handy. The service was very poor. Always seemed to be queues at the front counter. Staff were very short and rude.

The swimming pool is great but had a lot of reserved seats around it so when it gets hot, there is no where to sit. Apparently paying guests are not as worthy to sit reserved seating.

We had to swap rooms due to apparently water leakage from above, although we could not find any evidence of water. We had to pack everything the two nights before we had to leave to move into another room. The new room was smaller than what we were in. For the inconvience I would have thought an upgrade would have been appropriate.
