“Fantastic location, big room”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 March 2012

Years ago we had stayed at the Pennsylvania and had expected the rooms in the Salisbury to be about the same size (ie falling over luggage, squeezing into the bathroom etc). However this wasn't the case. The room was big and quiet as well as the beds were subsequently quite far from the corridor. There was a school party staying on the same floor & we only knew because we saw them in the corridor, we heard nothing from them at night - either they were the best behaved school children ever(!) or the rooms were quiet. The decor could be updated a bit, but no-one goes to New York to stare at the wallpaper. The location is great - just round the corner from Carnegie Deli, for the most massive pastrami sandwich you've ever attempted. Only took about 15 - 20 mins to walk to Times Sq and Central Park is about 2 streets away. We felt very safe in this area.
The fridge in the room & microwave do make life a little cheaper in NYC - being able to make own tea & coffee in the morning & storing own cold water.
The room was clean & we didn't have much interaction with the staff but when we did, they did seem helpful enough. It's great value for money & unless we're splashing out on something a little more expensive, we'll definitely come back to this hotel. So much better than the Pennsylvania for just a small bit more expense. Definitely worth it.

Just returned from a 1-week family vacation. Everything was exactly as expected from the other reviews, so no surprises.
I'm the type of traveller that likes a clean affordable room in a safe location, so the Salisbury was perfect for me. If you're "high maintenance", or like to complain about the smallest details, please look elsewhere.
Things I loved about the Salisbury: Central location, large and affordable room and closets, kitchenette, friendly staff (I don't know why people are complaining about the staff???)
Things that need improvement: Decor could use a little facelift, but then it would just become another expensive hotel, right? Also, the shower was a bit funky with alternating hot and cold spurts, and the A/C was a little loud...
Overall, an excellent experience. I got to go jogging every morning in beautiful Central Park, and with the $$ we saved on staying at the Salisbury, we were able to enjoy some memorable meals at Manhattan's finest restaurants!

Room Tip: Whole Foods is a few blocks away, so you can stock the kitchenette and save some $$

Our friends stayed at this hotel in 2007 and when we told them we were going to NYC, they said we should definitely consider the Salisbury Hotel. We researched it online and decided, yes, it ticked all the boxes. When we arrived, we were greeted by extremely helpful staff, one of whom immediately sold me a phone card (rather than have to go to a shop) and gave me clear instructions on how to use it.

We had a King Suite on the 10th floor and we couldn't have been more pleased. It had a little kitchen upon entry, and very comfortable living room with a 2.5 seater lounge, desk and flat screen tv, and a generous bedroom with a King bed, two walk-in wardrobes, dresser drawers and full length mirrors. I felt like we were in a real NY apartment - and apparently these are former permanent residences.

As I had read in previous reviews, the decor is a little dated, but it really doesn't matter. Everything works. We were at the rear of the building and heard no street noise.

The location of this place is fantastic. Close to all the iconic shops, subway, Central Park and deli's. And the price through NYC.com couldn't be beat! If I ever get back to NY, this is where I'll stay.

Room Tip: Get the King Suite

We stayed at the Salisbury for a 4 night stay during spring break (early march) with our two young children (6 and 7). We chose this hotel vs a chain hotel because of its location. Although I was a bit anxious about this, going to NYC in march, not knowing what weather we would get, we wanted something walking distance from the attractions we wanted to visit. Also we got a phenominal price on Expedia.
The hotel is one street south of central Park (+++), 10 streets from Time Square (+++) and has subway and central bus stops on every corner!!

The front desk staff (who greeted us in french when he saw we were from Montreal, thanks Michael!), checked our luggage since we got there way before check in time and gave us directions to a city parking space they have an arrangement with.

Once we got our room, we were pleasantly surprised by its size! The short corridor in the room leading to the beds has a closet, small fridge, microwave, coffee pot and small sink! We had two double beds that were very comfortable. The hotel itself was very quiet but being on 57th street, which is a busy two-way street (I know what street in NYC isn't busy!?) you have to expect some traffic noise. Then again, you dont go to NYC to sleep in.

The hotel offers breakfast for 15$/person but with all the amenities in the room, we got some supplies at the small grocery store next door and had breakfast in our room (little bowls of cereal, yogourts, granola, fruit), great way to save money!!!

Nothing negative to say about this wonderful stay at the Salisbury! Thank you for a great vacation! say

Our group of 3 is currently travelling around the States and we have had a mixture of different accommodations to make comparisons. We take on board that this is New York, it is busy and the hotel is busy but you can't rely totally on the great location to sell your hotel BUT it does help a lot. We really loved where it was situated and as we wanted to do a little exercise on our trip, the opportunity to pop out for a run and find Central Park 2 blocks away is a real bonus. Great place to easily walk too and perfect for a morning run before the big cruising days around NYC.

Like other big cities such as Paris and London we didn't expect to be in the room much and this was true but there are things that could so easily improve this from a good rating to a very good or excellent. We stayed on the 15th floor in a suite which was great for our group, although the one bathroom is located off the main bedroom, so the extra or 3rd person in our case had to access the bathroom through the bedroom. The 15th floor was good but no real views to talk of. Comfortable rooms with space which was important to us....the small problem areas were;

- Disinterested staff in the lobby area. Some more than others.
- Warm rooms and only March for us. Had air conditioners running but they were barely effective, would be a bit worried about staying here in the summer.
- No kettle for tea drinkers, no corkscrew for wine drinkers (not sure if that is a Baptist thing?)
- Wifi seems to be a problem throughout NY, so Salisbury isn't alone here. We were out that often that paying wasn't really an option. Survived with Iphone access on T Mobile
- Breakfast is now available on the 3rd floor but we didn't go. Not sure how good it is but it wasn't advertised by any means, except for a note under the door each evening. Strange.

I have used reviews to plan trips in many European, UK and now U.S locations and definitely not a fussy or hard marking reviewer. If you will be tripping around a lot like most do in New York it is hard to beat the location here......got to love the NQR lines (Subway) just up the road.....but someone just needs to breath some life into the staff and little things in the rooms. If you are thinking we got what we paid for I can't agree with that. Compared to San Fran, Utah, Seattle, Boston, New Orleans and Las Vegas (all different types of accom) this was last on service but the most expensive in cost.

Have given this hotel a very good rating but purely because of the room and its location. Room was very spacious and had its own separate sitting area, very large bedroom with a huge comfortable bed and could do with a bit modernisation.l Very clean though and plenty of space. The staff were surly and downright rude at times (although the staff in the breakfast room were very friendly - at least they knew how to smile). Front of house staff need to go on customer service training, got the feeling the concierege was only interested in taking luggage to and from vehicles and looking for tips (without putting in too much effort I might add). The all you can eat buffet contintental breakfast is excellent value for $9 and they have a good variety of cereal/fresh fruit/pancakes/waffles/pastries/cheeses/breads.

Overall, I was just not very impressed with the Salisbury. Many times there were two doorman at outside the door, but never once did they open the door. There was no free WiFi, the rooms view was looking into other bldgs windows and trash (was only on floor 6 of 17), the day of check out, I had housekeeping walk into my room TWICE before 10am, while I was in the bathroom. It was within close walking distance to Times Square (only a few blocks) but would not choose this hotel again.

Room Tip: The same type of rooms were booked for my co-workers and myself, however at least one of my co-worke...
