The Iroquois is a boutique hotel that gets it right! While all boutique hotels claim to specialise in personalised service, stylish decor, great dining and a unique atmosphere, the Iroquois is one of the few that actually gets all of these things right.
I had been to New York before and as the hotel is right in Midtown I was expecting a tiny room with limited amenities. Boy was I wrong! We were upgraded from our King Premier room to a suite which was double-the-size of an already good-sized room. The suite included a large living room with two couches, TV, bar and desk and a bedroom with King-size bed and bathroom with separate shower and bathtub. The bed was well appointed with large, squashy pillows and pillow-top mattress akin to the ultra-comfy beds one finds at 5-star hotels. Bathroom amenities included Molton Brown accessories and nice quality towels.
Beyond the physical size of the room, I was impressed by the quality of the design. This is what a boutique hotel should be. Both the living room and bedroom had giant floor to ceiling windows and warm coloured tones in the furniture, window dressing and bed dressing. The couches, bed, and seats were all very comfortable. It was a wonderful cozy feeling to return to after a day of pounding the pavement sight-seeing in New York and considering the size, it felt incredibly luxurious and indulgent considering we were in the heart of Manhattan.
In addition to the room, I was very impressed with the service. One measure I always use for service in a hotel is whether all of the staff great you when passing (including housekeeping and doormen). The Iroquois certainly passed that test. Of course, evening turndown service is provided and doormen were quick to offer umbrellas when it rained. I must single out Vanessa, the concierge as superb and one of the finest and most efficient concierges I've experienced. Her Mexican restaurant recommendation was spot on and she never had to rely on books or maps to help us along the way. She is a true asset to the hotel and compliments its fine style and rooms.
One other surprise, was the quality of the dining. I'm not usually one for dining in hotel restaurants, but we looked up reviews of the Iroquois' French restaurant and they were very favourable, so on our first night we decided to give it a try. Again, excellent service and superb food all round. The bar too, has great reviews and was packed each night such that we didn't even try to go down for a night cap. Usually, in these small hotels, the dining and bar is seen as an after thought, but not at the Iroquois!
And finally, the location right in Mid-town is ideal for any tourists to the city. Located along a street lined with the private clubs of Ivy League universities, the Iroquois is a short walk from Times Square (and all the key subway lines), Broadway shows, Grand Central Station, Union Square, 5th Avenue Shopping and Central Park.
All in all, the Iroquois has to be one of my favorite surprise hotel finds on my travels. Very few properties can tick all the boxes from room, decor, service, dining and location but the Iroquois does it. Further, to find such a hotel where the atmosphere is so warm and service oriented in mid-town was a welcome surprise. I loved my stay here and could not find a single fault. I would not hesitate to return when I am next in New York and recommend it whole-heartedly for anyone looking for some luxury, great service and warm atmosphere in Midtown.
