“Bed was a tramploline”
Reviewed 29 March 2012

The location is very good, which helps as it really is all this hotel has going for it.

There is absolutely nothing jolly about this place and this is best captured by the front desk staff who seemed unable to even force a smile.

The room was cleaned well each day, which was appreciated but it was dated and the bed was really uncomfortable. We were really only using the room to sleep in as we were out and about for most of our 4 days in NYC but the least you would expect from a supposed 4* place is a bed that doesn't seem to have been used as a tramploline over its very long life.

There was no safe in the room and the ones available to use in the lobby would not fit any valuable larger than a passport. Internet was available in the lobby but at $4 for 15 minutes they must be joking. They weren't- As I said, this place is far from jolly!

Anyway, it was a cheap option in good location so served its purpose on this trip but would never stay here again.

We stayed on the Jolly Madison (now NH) from the 19 to 22 March. The location is superb, you can walk to Grand Central Station, Times Square, Fifth Av., Empire State, even to Central Park. You can't beat that.

The personnel on the reception was not friendly and not eager to help. We had made reservations thru NH World and we had some trouble with it (it was prepaid) and they didn't even bother to call them, because it was a long distance call. In the mean time we called NH and after they received a call from the corporate office, everything was solved.

The breakfast buffet is good, european style, bread, cheese and ham. Good quality food. Of course, you don't expect a lot of fresh food, but is very good. The seating for parties of 3 or more is difficult because the room is small and they only have 3 big tables. Very good before going to walk the city.

The rooms are small and old. My room was clean, very small space for the luggage, and the bathroom was clean. I know that NY hotels are this way, but as I am used to bigger rooms, it felt odd, but hey.. you are here to know the city, so I wasn't very worried about this.

In general, this hotel has great location, you can rest and have breakfast and get to know the city at your own pace. We took the shuttle from the airport to Grand Central and we walked the 2 blocks and saved on the taxi.

After reading reviews on here we were slightly concerned about staying in this hotel. However we're glad we did - it was spotlessly clean, we had a large room & the hotel in general was very quiet. It was approx a 10 min walk to Empire State Building & Central Station, 15 mins to Times Sq.
Reception staff not the friendliest I've came across, they gave the impression they just didn't want to be there! The 'bell boy' (Roy) was great, very welcoming and chatty.
We didn't use the hotel bar or restaurant, however did try the Moonstruck diner across the street and would recommend it for food... It was hot, fresh & great value for money. They don't have a licence to serve alcohol however the manager told us we could go to the Store and bring our own beer/wine in to have with our food!
All in all, would 100% recommend this hotel and wouldn't hesitate in staying there again.

When we checked in, we got the immediate sense that we were not welcomed. The staff is cold and not willing lend a helping hand with anything. They did not seem too happy being there. The only exception was the bellman(didn't catch his name) who was very friendly and funny at times and made the check in process more tolerable.
The rooms are badly in need of renovation as well as the lobby. Carpet in the room was shredded in some places and just plain smelled bad.
We did not try the breakfast in the hotel but did go to Moonstruck across the street which was delicious and a great deal.

We were not impressed. The room was small, the air conditioning very noisy, the staff behind reception were surly and were incapable of printing out our boarding passes despite several attempts and what is worst THEY CHARGE FOR INTERNET ACCESS. This is disgraceful and why dropped the rating from below average to terrible.

Room Tip: If you have to stay there have breakfast in the cafe called Moonstruck which is opposite

Stayed here for the New York Half Marathon excellent location near tourist attractions and grand central station which is the gateway to their great subway system ! Rooms albeit small were clean and surprisingly quiet for New York staff were very helpful and the Moonstruck diner accross the road was great for breakfast lunch and dinner ! If you are taking the air train from the airport connect at Jamaica and then onto to grand central station grand total of $7.00 as opposed to the $50 for a cab and no hassle at all ! Would definately stay here again
