You can read a thousand reviews and never be sure of your hotel choice, we did this with The Lombardy and had a very pleasant surprise. My wife never settles for the first room we see, yet never once mentioned moving from the suite we were assigned, it was more like an apartment and you would be very hard pressed to find better value.

The one bedroom suite was much more like an apartment, the nicely decorated en-suite bedroom would have been fine as a room with lots of storage space, a king sized bed and a fair sized bathroom. Beyond the bedroom was a lobby leading to an open plan kitchenette and a very large sitting room oh, and did I mention the second bathroom off the lobby? A his and hers bathroom or a one bedroom suite that would suit two couples or a family as the tasteful sofa was a roll-out bed too.

The apartment was nicely decorated, even if the second bathroom was a bit night-clubby with black tiles and furnishings but had a good shower and reasonable bathtub and the kitchenette had a small grill/mini oven, hob, microwave and fridge. Perfect if you didn't fancy venturing out for breakfast - the hotel is under refurbishment, (noise wasn't an issue) but it did mean there was no breakfast buffet. The alternative was the hotel issuing $5:00 breakfast vouchers for the 'Midtown Diner' a block away, great for an authentic NY diner experience (think greasy spoon not high end and you'll get the picture) but $5:00 will barely get you a hot drink and a cream cheese bagel. If you're real tea drinkers like us, pack some teabags (and some long-life milk just to get you started) as there's a kettle in the room, no room service and it's hard to get a decent cuppa in New York, you'll be glad you did.

The location was pretty good, three blocks away from Bloomingdales, between Park and Lexington Avenue, good for the subway and buses so it's well worth getting a metro card, and fairly quiet, lousy views but you'd have to pay for a really fancy hotel to get that. But this is New York, do you really want to spend your time looking out of the window at yet another high rise building, or do you want to be out there enjoying the city? Maybe it was just us but we found the hotel staff fine though not that friendly or helpful really, not rude but disinterested. Cleaning staff were very good, friendly, helpful and attentive.

We would certainly recommend The Lombardy if you are not looking for glamour, glitz or high end luxury, but what you do get is a great, clean, room in a quiet location perfect for shopping and exploring the city and great to come back to for relaxing and taking it easy. For the room size and location, The Lombardy is really good value for money, not so great if you want room sevice and all the trimmings but we enjoyed our stay here and would stay there again.

If you are self-sufficient, like homely comforts and and don't care about room service but want a good, clean quiet well-priced place to stay, you won't be disappointed.

Room Tip: Go for a suite suite to give you loads more space.

Ok the Lombardy is a gem... An oasis of old fashioned charm from a bygone era. But if you're hoping for a Big NY Horel Experience: this ain't it! This is NOT the corporate hotel chain-type place with 500 identical rooms and a huge lobby with people streaming in and out and a changing parade of nameless faceless workers behind the desk. Instead, here you'll find a slow-paced, elegant but simple, old time, small NYC hotel with the same two guys (very helpful) behind the counter and other friendly staff. Oh, and HUGE rooms. I mean big big suites depending on which room they assign you (read the other reviews & you'll understand: this is a place with co-op owners who let the hotel rent out their rooms when they're out of town). I've stayed in bigger brand name hotels in New York, but I keep coming back to the Lombardy because of the room size, value, location, service, free wifi, small scale and cozy familiarity.
Happy travels!

Room Tip: Stay in a room facing 56th street - noisy air conditioners in the back alley!

My husband and I both had business in NYC, and the Lombardy provided the perfect midtown location. It is close to everything you need food, transportation and other emenities. The hotel is not aswanky meet and greet place but rather a nice quiet, comfortable place to relax after a long day of hoofing it around the city. We had a kitchenette, computer w/free wi-fi, and a beautifully tiled shower in our room. The room was very clean and convenient. I would highly recommend.

At the time of booking, we had no idea what the room would look like - the room assignment depends upon what is available on the day you arrive. Each unit is decorated differently. When booking, you may identify your preferences (eg "quiet room at the back) but the hotel clearly advises they cannot provide a guarantee. The unit we were assigned had just undergone a total renovation, and we were told that we were the first guests to occupy it. It was standard size for Manhatten: a well-organized bed/sitting room with kitchen facility at one end. The decor was very modern, as were the superb spa-like bathroom and kitchen. Our unit was ultra-clean. The units next to us were under renovation during our 5 night stay, but the hammering did not begin until after 9 am and ended by 5 pm. There was no disruption to us - we were out all day, enjoying everything NYC has to offer.
It was unusually hot and humid in NYC at the end of September; the A/C was functioning very well.
All in all a very comfortable room and enjoyable stay.

My friend & I stayed over 3 separate occasions for total of 11 nights. Rooms were big on all stays. Once had separate living room but small closet. The others we had no living room but 2 closets. Poor breakfast, dont even think about it, buy outside. Reception provided basic service. Generally great location with easy access to most attractions via trains. But not so convenient for good restaurants for dinnner or night life, you'd expect to travel 20-30min to go anyway decent. I'll stay again if I'm going there to shop, otherwise I'll try Soho/Tribeca area next time, as more vibrant.

I had a suite in the Lombardy and I would say it's overrated for the price. The suite is large, but badly needs an update. There is a library in the living room with musty old books no one has touched in years. The living room TV is no more than 19 inches. If you want to watch sports in the living room, you'd have to squint really hard to make out anything; sofa and chairs are probably a relic from the '90s. Very spacious, but I would have traded that for a smaller but more comfortable and warm room. For $350+ a night, you can do better! Also, it has only 2 elevators, and one of them has an attendant. So I guess if you prefer full service in your elevator ride, this is good--however, if you don't, then you have one working elevator.

It is my understanding from speaking with the staff that this was once a fine residential hotel. Now it is mostly a co-op hotel where “shareholders” own the individual rooms and decorate them to their liking. They all come with a little kitchenette complete with small frig, microwave, coffee maker and hair blow dryer. The hotel supplies the sheets, towels, toiletries and housekeeping. I had never heard of this place before booking four rooms here for a family get together. Each room was very unique in their own way and one was more beautiful than the next. I found the rooms to be very large, very clean, very comfortable and quiet. I love that they double sheet the beds – a big thing for me with hotels. It is in a great mid-town location. I highly recommend it and look forward to my next visit.
