“Elegance on the upper west side.”
Reviewed 10 March 2012

Located in a lovely upper west side neighborhood, this small boutique hotel provides a level of service that you would expect from a more expensive hotel. From the minute you enter, you are treated to elegance and luxury. The rooms are lovely, quiet, and large for NY hotels. The concierge helped us with tickets to the 9/11 memorial and with last minute dinner reservations. Nice Matin, an excellent French restaurant, is accessible through the lobby. We found a deal on the hotel website that saved us 50%. This was our third stay and we will definitely be back.

For guests visiting Upper West Side and Columbia University, this hotel offers a nice and convenient accommodation with efficient, friendly service and clean rooms. The attached restaurant Nice Matin provides good and interesting meals (try the muffin at breakfast) in a casual, busy setting, but full of New York atmosphere. Too noisy heater in the room in which the window should have proper curtains.

Overall, I would heartily recommend this as a base from which to explore the city.

Stayed here for a few days. Though not very large, the room was comfortable. Lighting a little dim. Cool rotating shower head.

Short walk to the subway, good restaurants, and Central Park.

Staff were cheerful and friendly without being pushy and condescending as can happen in NYC.

Good and free wifi.

The only thing I don't understand in a hotel of this caliber is a heating/cooling system that works without a thermostat. You have to keep waking up at night to turn the heating off and on as it simply blows air steadily like a fan.

Try the Italian restaurant next door (Bettola) for good pizza and a wonderful chocolate cake.

We stayed here 3 nights in February 2012 -- had come up to enjoy the city and see an opera. It's a short walk to the subway and from there you can get almost anywhere (and we did!) One day we walked across Central Park to the Met and back; the hotel is also very close to the Natural History museum. Also, there are lots of restaurants on Amsterdam -- we went to Sol y Sombra for tapas one night and Salumeria for Italian small plates.

Our queen bed standard room was average size but nicely appointed. We had space to store all of our clothes and put the suitcases away. We asked for the coffee maker and it was delivered promptly. The bathroom amenities are nice and the shower is wonderful. Unfortunately, the walls are thin, so one night I awoke to someone snoring next door. Suggestions to management on the room: 1) change the annoying combination light/fan fixture in the bathroom, because you can't just have one or the other, and the fan is really loud. 2) consider installing a small makeup/shaving mirror for those of us who can't see that well any more!

The staff were all very helpful and efficient. We used the fitness room a couple of times -- this is on the small side but perfectly adequate for doing some cardio and weights on the road. (You could also arrange for a massage there). As part of our reservation, we got a discount at the adjacent restaurant Nice Matin for breakfast. This turns out to be quite a nice place for breakfast (they are also open for lunch and dinner) with lots of both healthy and unhealthy choices.

I would recommend this hotel for anyone looking for a nicely situated boutique hotel on the upper west side.

A small (by NYC standards) boutique hotel on the upper west side. Quaint and gracious with friendly doormen who greet you as you come and go. Our room was a standard size with 2 double beds, on the 6th floor with windows facing both 79th Street and Amsterdam Ave. No fridge or electric jug but did have a single cup coffee/tea maker and coffee/tea supplies. Bathroom was small (but big enough) with a powerful shower over the bath and granite bench top on the vanity. Nice fluffy white towels and nice toiletries including soap, shampoo, conditioner and shower gel. Also a hair dryer, an  in-room safe and complementary wi-fi and daily newspaper. The restaurant attached to the hotel is the Nice Matin and we received 3 x 15% discount vouchers for our 5 night stay. With the discount, breakfast for 3 cost $40.80 (plus tip) for a full American (coffee, juice & hot cooked b'fst eg Eggs Benedict). The restaurant was almost full both mornings we dined there but without pre booking we were shown promptly to a table. The food was delicious and the staff were very efficient.
Across the road from the hotel is a Duane Reade pharmacy/convenience store that is open 24/7 and sells everything you would ever need (including beer!) If you are after a quick snack Pizza by La Grolla is just across the road on Amsterdam Ave and I can say the pizzas are good and very well priced.
The hotel is a short walk to the subway station on W79th Street and the 1,2&3 trains come along every 5-10 minutes. In the opposite direction is a 2 block walk to the American Museum of Natural History, Central Park and the Dakota Building. We found the walk to the front of Central Park at Columbus Circle quite easy as well as the walk back up Broadway to 79th Street.
You can probably tell by now that I recommend this hotel as a great place to stay - its easy to get to and easy to get around from. It's clean, welcoming and although on the slightly more expensive side, is worth it.

Had really been looking forward to staying here for four nights and show New York City to my parents. Everything lived up to our expectations; location, Nice Matin, staff... We got an upgrade which was a really nice surprise. Really nice and large bathroom! Only minus is the noice from the street.

Room Tip: Loved the 710, even though very noicy from the street. Nice view!

Stayed here on an internet package - second night was "half off." We liked the suite style to accommodate our family of 4. Great location, clean, decent space. Front desk accommodated our early arrival. HOWEVER: 1. heating system didn't work well, bathroom was FREEZING, and hotel rooms were cold unless we blasted heat, then a bit too warm. 2. Water temp in shower was hard to control. 3. Sofa bed was broken, and this was an issue as we had both of our young adult kids with us and needed 3rd bed. Housekeeping brought rollaway which was fine -- but we were surprised broken sofa bed was still in room. 4. One of two elevators was broken the morning we were leaving -- it took us 25 minutes to get down to the lobby with our bags. Front desk was not particularly concerned over the inconvenience. Shoulder shrug level of response. Overall this is a nice spot at the discounted price -- would NOT stay here at their full rate.
