“Imperfectly fine”
Reviewed 4 January 2012

I booked this Super 8 on the strength of the reviews here at Tripadvisor, and it was fine for an overnight stay on the way to somewhere else. The room was large, clean and comfortable. They're pet-friendly, which was important to me, and they only charge a $10.60 flat rate. I had to sign an agreement that the pet would stay in a carrier all the time they're in the room -- what???? Maybe it's a CYA thing, but I can't imagine confining my poor kitty to the carrier she'd been in the entire day.

I got to breakfast, served 6-9 am in the lobby, at 6 am and it was okay -- cereal, small cheese danish, bagels and cream cheese. High-carb stuff, which I try to avoid, but hey -- you can't have everything. I could have wished for a hot beverage that was more like coffee and less like warm brown water, though. Fortunately, there was a Perkins not far up the road where I got a good hot breakfast (Perkins is a nice little chain, BTW, kinda like Friendly's or Marie Callender's).

I guess my only (minor) complaint is that there were very few rooms occupied in the hotel, and they put us right next to each other, which made for an unnecessarily noisy experience. Perhaps this was to make housekeeping more efficient, but they could have separated us by a few rooms instead of packing us in right next to each other! My neighbors were noisy at night when I wanted to sleep, and I was noisy early in the morning getting my stuff out to get on the road early. All in all, though, a satisfactory experience for $54.99 plus the pet fee.

I chose this motel blindly, only taking into consideration location and price. My husband remembered a bad experience at a Super 8 many years ago so he was wary. We were extremely pleased with this motel. It was super clean. Our room had good features (refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, hair dryer that had power, free wi-fi, a safe for valuables.) The shower curtain was on a curved pole so the curtain did not blow into the shower and the shower head (many settings) was set high enough that my 6 foot tall husband could easily wash the top of his head. There was satellite tv with 6 HBO channels. We were just over the Mason-Dixon line (15 miles south of Gettysburg) so it was easy to get to many Civil War sites. The highway was just out the door so it was easy to get to wherever we wanted to go. There was brewed coffee available in the lobby 24/7. The breakfast was only starchy carby things, but a very decent breakfast buffet is close by, plus two major supermarkets. This is an excellent place to stay. Front desk staff was polite and housekeeping was excellent. BTW, husband is a smoker and this motel has smoking rooms. Some might find this a minus, but we find it a plus.

Location is convenient as it's right off of 15 and close to lots of eateries. Second floor reeked of cigarette smoke, but thankfully our room did not. Our room was clean and adequate although the pillows and towels were flat. Breakfast was good enough to hold us thru to lunch. I really like that they are trying to be green by providing recycled cups and encouraging to refrain from daily towel and sheet changes.

We stayed here with the intent to hike in the state park. It was the perfect location. There's a grocery store and fast food restaurant nearby. The front desk was very friendly and the rooms were comfortable. My only complaint would be that mattress wasn't very good and I had some difficulty getting to sleep.

This was one of the very few hotels where I felt comfortable actually using the blanket on the bed. The breakfast area is small and no waffles :-( Other than that, if you want excellent accommodations for the price, this is the place to stay.

AARP rate booked on the Super 8 website was very good, and this is a very clean motel. The wifi worked well, too. The location is a little hard to find from the highway but not a big problem. Thurmont, MD, is very near Gettysburg, PA, where we enjoyed visiting the battlefield and the Eisenhower farm.
