Owner description: Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, but stands today in ruin, a haunting world of crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers. Known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, this was the world’s first true “penitentiary,” a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of convicts. Tours today include the cellblocks, solitary punishment cells, Al Capone’s Cell, and Death Row.

“Terror behind the walls”

Halloween season is here and eastern state is an awesome place for a "haunted Halloween adventure." High scream minimum gore, it's fun and the atmosphere suits it perfectly. Proceeds go to the Eastern State Penetentiary Historic Site which is a non profit. Would love to check out the daytime tour one day as I love old places.

I recently brought my kids there (sept 21, ticket prices are much less compared to october prices) and 2 of them couldn't handle finishing it (16 yr old and 10 yr old) so they did end up having to leave the area. The staff was helpful and considerate in that regard.

Otherwise, I will try to make it every year for the Halloween season, it's worth it (this was my second visit) not cheap or cheesy.

“Get Locked up for the afternoon!”

I had seen this facility on several TV shows over the past few years. The tour was fantastic and we had a ball. Not only was it informative, but the tour guides also made it fun. We needed a break from US history for the day and this was just what the doctor ordered!!

“Al Capone Slept Here”

This was a neat place to visit. The history of our judicial system and our prison system and competing thoughts on appropriate punishment of criminals is laid bare in brick and mortar. Don't miss Als cell.

“Creep in parts, cheesy in a lot of parts”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 September 2013

We had a great time, the eastern state penn is just an amazing historical structure in and of itself. I went ten plus years ago, and it was truly creepy. Quiet, dark, and spooky.
This time around (2013)- it was SO overdone. Some parts were creepy but it was mostly cheesy and complete chaos. Too many actors, loud music/sounds. Pretty unimpressed.

“A different sort of history”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 September 2013

This place was as cool as I hoped. If you like Alcatraz in SF, go here! I think this tour is a little better. This place is probably not a good fit for the mobility challenged or small kids though. This is a maintained ruin and the sidewalks aren't the greatest. I loved Al Capone's cell. This is a great place to go if you're bored with colonial history downtown.
