Description: Behind the wrought iron gate, past the herbaceous patio and through the atrium is Talula's Garden, the warm and elegant Washington Square eatery from Aimee Olexy and Starr Restaurants. The modern menu, prepared with carefully-sourced ingredients and a light European touch, changes with the seasons. The artful cuisine, hospitable staff, sustainable spirits, and a focus on cheese make the dining experience here incredibly memorable.

Four of us had a pre show Sunday dinner that was delicious and paced properly, leaving us well enough time for a 7:30 show, even with desert and coffee. We split one of their many cheese platters as an appetizer. It was delicious and well balanced. In all of my meals at Talula's every one seems better than the last one. This is a must go locations if visiting Philadelphia. Reserve well in advance for weekend seatings.

We were in Philly for a few days staying at the Morris House Hotel and asked for a restaurant recommendation. They suggested Talula's Garden which is literally right around the corner and boy are we glad they did. Were able to get an early reservation the same day by booking online.

The website has a quote from famous chef Alice Waters and it is clear that the people running Talula's Garden have her in mind with their menus. All I can say is that every dish we had was wonderful in a way that made this place memorable - we were tasting flavours that we had never before encountered despite the fact that the ingredients were not new. It was their combination that was a work of genius.

It started with a mint gimlet infused with anise. Still a gimlet, but the hint of anise gave it an extra bit of zip. The rolls were more a brioche with a salt and pepper butter that almost melted in the mouth.

The chicken liver toast with sour cherries and lardons in a port reduction is as close to perfection as a pate dish can be.

The beet salad with walnuts and goat cheese is not unusual to find, but somehow this version was better than any we've had. I think it was because the beets had perfect texture - not too hard or soft, the Goldilocks version of beet salad.

The pasta dishes are the right size for an older palate - not overwhelming, just enough to satisfy. I had the farfelle with escargot glazed in pernod - simply fantastic. My wife had the ricotta ravioli with pine nuts. She loved it.

For dessert we split a butterscotch pudding with salted caramel - again just simply marvellous. Really showed what a pudding could be.

The service was excellent, the decor eclectic in an old building with 20 foot high ceilings and the customer mix varied. All in with cocktails, a glass of wine each and a port to finish with tip $185.00.

We were here on a Monday night in April so it wasn't jam packed, but I suspect when the patio is open and on a weekend it would be super busy. Food this good is bound to attract a crowd.

I judge a restaurant by the bread they put down on the table. Once you try the garlic rolls they give you when you sit down, lets just say YOU ARE HOOKED! They far exceeded my expectations as well of the rest of the meal!

Best Pate I have had. The duck and carrots were tasty as well. I really enjoyed our meal. Great service, waiter didn't blink an eye when we said were going to share a bunch of plates.

Cocktails are bit on the sweet side.

We visited on a Saturday night in March, so the garden was not open, and the restaurant was buzzing. While it's a top-notch restaurant, I expected a calmer and more romantic ambiance. When making the reservation several weeks in advance, I had asked for a quieter seating area. We were seated in a row of couples at individual tables that were about 18 inches apart, making it impossible to ignore your neighbors' conversations and food deliveries. The noise level required elevated voices to be heard over a general din. Some of the dishes, while excellent, come across as a bit too treated or precious, when sometimes just a properly-cooked, very fresh piece of fish may not need so much "value added" in the kitchen. One complaint: the "winter roots" salad didn't really have much in the way of winter vegetables -- it had the same lettuce as the garden salad, plus carrot. We had two mains -- the striped bass and the shrimp & scallop mezze -- which were very good, but both seemed to have a certain similar sauce on them.
The markup on the wine list is among the highest I've seen even at a high-end restaurant. For example, a bottle of Cloud Break, their lowest-priced Pinot Noir at $54, goes for $9 at Total Wine.
Service was excellent and punctual, despite the restaurant being full.
