We've been planning to go to Vernick's for awhile now but we always found it hard to get reservations. When we visited Philadelphia one Saturday, our party of three opted to walk in at 4:45 PM and we were able to snag the last table by the bar area on the main floor.

While Vernick is definitely higher end, no dress code is required and the ambiance is cool and trendy. The service was professional, efficient and not overbearing. They have a good wine list and the menu caters to a variety of palates.

After placing our order, they start you off with an amuse bouche. For that evening, we were served a mini ramekin of soup and a meatball in a sauce plate. It was so small and yet so good it left us wanting more. For appetizers, we had the charcoal-grilled octopus, the cocoa tagliatelle with duck ragout and the sea urchin with an egg. For entrees, we ordered the grilled black sea bass, the rack of porcelet and the lamb ribs with braised lamb neck which was perfectly cooked.

Everything that we heard and read about Vernick and the food they serve lived up to the hype. The service was impeccable and the food was exceptional. We'll definitely be back.

Tip: While it is not inexpensive, it's best to dine at Vernick's on an expense account.

WOW! That is all I can say! This place is truly awesome! I am from San Francisco and this restaurant had the type of food and ambiance of a restaurant you would see in SF! It is in a brownstone and when you walk in the downstairs is this really hip and hopping intimate bar area with open windows. Cozy yet airy! Even if you don't have dinner reservations, this is a great spot to get a cocktail or two!
Upstairs is this amazing seating area for people with reservations. It is very open, but with the candles makes the atmosphere intimate. There is a little balcony area that is open so you can see out. This place books up fast so make reservations ASAP but put your name on the wait list and you will mostly likely get in, that's how I got seated.
Highlights from the night were the grilled octopus(best I've ever had), rack of lamb, pork belly, and brined chicken(yes chicken, but it is the most amazing chicken). Such a wonderful meal! Highly recommend!

The food was exciting, delicious, and beautifully presented. Unfortunately the server came across as condescending in response to common questions: "what vodkas do you have" or later "would you recommend entree x or y". In fact, refused to give a recommendation, which was off-putting. Thankfully our busser had a much more pleasant demeanor and the food was delicious, which contributed to a nice evening.

My husband and I went with another couple. We did not have a reservation but went early and put our names in for a table. The hostess was nice but really confused us, which led to an additional 45 minute wait in a very uncomfortable section of the restaurant. Eventually we got into the dining room where the wait staff and food were great. The dining room is nothing to write home about, but the food runners and waiter were terrific.
