We've been planning to go to Vernick's for awhile now but we always found it hard to get reservations. When we visited Philadelphia one Saturday, our party of three opted to walk in at 4:45 PM and we were able to snag the last table by the bar area on the main floor.
While Vernick is definitely higher end, no dress code is required and the ambiance is cool and trendy. The service was professional, efficient and not overbearing. They have a good wine list and the menu caters to a variety of palates.
After placing our order, they start you off with an amuse bouche. For that evening, we were served a mini ramekin of soup and a meatball in a sauce plate. It was so small and yet so good it left us wanting more. For appetizers, we had the charcoal-grilled octopus, the cocoa tagliatelle with duck ragout and the sea urchin with an egg. For entrees, we ordered the grilled black sea bass, the rack of porcelet and the lamb ribs with braised lamb neck which was perfectly cooked.
Everything that we heard and read about Vernick and the food they serve lived up to the hype. The service was impeccable and the food was exceptional. We'll definitely be back.
Tip: While it is not inexpensive, it's best to dine at Vernick's on an expense account.
