Our "deluxe non smoking" room which reeked of stale smoke was so tiny we could barely unpack. The bathroom (mostly in a state of disrepair) seemed more like a closet with a toilet a small tub with a poorly placed towel rack you had to duck under as not to poke your eye out. The bed was not comfortable and their lack of sufficient parking had late arrivals scrambling for less safe venues out side the property. I also do not think their random opportunism makes for good business. A confirmed reservation should not be unilaterally increased by 75% because of special events that give them the self appointed right to gouge..A view of a bridge does little to justify their poor hospitality. Find another place and consider yourself warned. You can do better for $140

I live in Portland, Or and fish every year there at least three times and this year I made reservations in June which were confirmed and in mid July someone from the motel called and said the rate for Friday was increased by $50 because there was a regatta on the weekend they could rent the room for much more. I called the Astoria Chamber of Commerce and complained but this had on affect on the bill.
This is an old motel with bare essentials but clean.
I will look for other motels in the area to stay next year and they will loose my business.

Can't figure how they came up with name, but the reason we stayed was because of it. Turned out to be nice. Remodeled rooms, great location in the downtown area. The Dunes is a mom and pop kind of place and run by someone else. Great service. Came to the coast for the weekend, couldn't find a room on the coastline, but was able to get in at the Dunes. Thanks,

Stayed one night here in order to catch a ride up river with the Rose Festival Fleet in the morning. Excellent little motel with great views of the river for those rooms with windows facing north. Room was perfect--clean, comfortable, and the price was affordable. I would not hesitate to stay here again.

Speedy reservation service combined online ease, clear email & cheerful phone contact actually at the motel. Traveling solo, I'm picky about things like room location and outdoor lighting, so I appreciated being able to speak with customer service who knew the unit. Unfortunately, I had to cancel but even that was handled cheerfully. I look forward to staying there again. P.S. I was booked for the "Ride the Navy Ships" annual event of the Portland Rose Festival - which is a busy crunch for all lodgings.

I have been a loyal customer of the Astoria Dunes Motel Since 2006. I stay there everytime I got to Astoria which has been over 10 times. I called in Jan 2011 to make a reservation for the weekend of April 29th. I was quoted a rate of $88.00 per night plus tax. When I went to check in this weekend they told me the rates went up to $157.00 per night as they had new management. I waited for an hour to speak to the manager. I never got to speak to the manager face to face as he or she never came out of the back as they spoke to the receptionist thru the phone only. As a repeat customer you would think they would honor the rate given to me months before. They did not! I will never stay here again and I will tell everyone I know that they have horrible business practices!

The upside is the place is freshly remodeled and super clean. The desk clerk was really personable and helpful. There is a swimming pool and jacuzzi. The clerk said there is a sauna but it isn't in the same area as the pool and I didn't feel like asking more specifically. Some rooms have a view of the bridge and a little view of the river, which they charge more for. The downside is you have a tricky access/egress with the driveway right in the middle of an intersection that is controlled by a light. It looks to me like there could be plenty of car wrecks there. If you are coming to Astoria for reasons other than a good view, this is a clean, friendly, reasonable, safe place to stay. If you are looking for a view, the Crest Motel on the other end of town is the place for you.

Room Tip: Competitive area. Negotiate. poor view of river
