If you are looking for authentic Baltimore-style crab cakes, in my opinion this is the place. These are not "Maryland" crab cakes, which in my experience are vastly different. Maryland crab cakes generally refer to a southern Maryland tradition of crab cake without lumps and with other spices like onion. The crab cakes at Pappas are backfin meat cakes, with minimal filling (just enough to keep all the lump crab meat held together). If you get the crab cake platter, it comes with an 8-ounce crab cake (plenty for one meal, trust me!) as well as a coup of soup, two sides and a drink. We chose the Maryland crab soup, which was a little spicy and well seasoned. It contained visible crab meat, as well as plenty of vegetables. A basic tossed salad with fresh dressing was next, followed by the platter with crab cake and another side. In my opinion, this was a LOT of food for the price! My side was green beans, which were fresh and cooked perfectly.
We also enjoyed the service when we went. Our server was very gracious, as she dealt with a party of 6 including 3 nonagenarians (our 90-plus years parents) who are all hard of hearing and take quite some time to answer questions! Our server was patient and spoke more slowly to accommodate our parents. This was noticed by all during our meal.
All in all, a fantastic experience!
