Skidaway Island State Park
Ranked #14 of 166 things to do in Savannah
Certificate of Excellence

Attraction details
Fee: Yes
Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: Located near historic Savannah, this park borders Skidaway narrows, a part of Georgia’s intracoastal waterway. Trails wind through maritime forest and past salt marsh, leading to a boardwalk and observation tower. Visitors can watch for deer, fiddler crabs, raccoon, egrets and other wildlife. Inside the park’s interpretive center, birders will find binoculars, reference books and a window where they can look for migrating species such as Painted Buntings. Children will especially enjoy seeing the towering, 20-foot Giant Ground Sloth replica and reptile room. A scenic campground is nestled under live oaks and Spanish moss, while groups can enjoy privacy in their own pioneer campgrounds. Open-air picnic shelters and an enclosed group shelter are popular spots for parties, reunions and other celebrations.

After reading reviews I thought the campground would be special, Not. Paid for premium site, grass around it needs to be cut, fire ring not cleaned out , site needs some gravel, mud puddles after rain storm. In my opinion Park is average to good. Nice trees and clean bathhouse. It is not one of the most beautiful places in the world. In defense of them, I am sure the daily rains have affected maintenance. It is quiet with good privacy at sites.

We were very lucky to secure campsites for the July 4th holiday at this lovely campground. They have campsites to suit all kinds of travelers. The bathrooms were always clean - even the older ones. There are a couple of trails and the campground is perfect for bike riding (if you can stand the heat).

It's a great place to call home-base to explore the Savannah area.

Skidaway is the place to go if you like the outdoors and want that true Southern swampy mystery feeling, sans the houses and garden's of good and evil. The trails are all wide and smooth hardpack. Smooth enough even for a stroller, I would say. Great for biking, walking, and hanging out with your best bud, man or beast. There are picnic tables and restrooms and out on the trails there are wildlife viewing areas. You can easily do an interesting half mile jaunt, or rack up over 5 miles wandering all the trails.
Spring is the best smelling time (magnolias and gardenias and the swamp isn't warm yet), but winter is the best time for peace. In the height of tourist season there are often loud folks in groups that wear the edges off the peace pretty quickly.

If you can beat the heat head out to the parks trails. It’s cheap, convenient and fun. Simple flat hikes that allow you to walk the perimeter of a river marsh. The back loops by like Still loop are pretty along with some of the Red Cedars that grow back there!

Skidaway State Park is a great place to camp. They have a nature tour with a Park Ranger that takes you through a salt marsh and marine deciduous forest.
