“Handles its downtown location well”
Reviewed 5 April 2012

We have stayed many times at the HGI at the airport and rate it highly as does Tripadvisor. So I was dubious about staying at the HGI Downtown. I was unduly worried. The valet parking at $15 works very well and is secure underground. The noise level at night was non existent-we stayed in back rooms. The hot tub and pool were well used but then this is Easter week. The breakfast was heaving with people but we were all served quickly and well. The wifi was slow, irritatingly slow. And it is a shame they have no dinner service (you are asked to go to Doubletree) BUT it is convenient for the River.

Basic "nice" hotel; got it thru Priceline so was a deal. But location certainly makes it a winner! Savannah after the holidays is great, uncrowded.

When planning an overnight stay in Savannah during a road trip to Florida the second half of December, we spent hours reviewing accommodations in the historic district. We settled on the Hilton Garden Inn based on location and price. The hotel appears new or recently renovated, the room was immaculate and very quiet, and every staff member we met was helpful and polite. The concierge lady went out of her way to help us maximize our short, first time visit to the city and we thoroughly enjoyed a pre-dinner drink at the tiny bar in the lobby. The bartender was a local lad who entertained us with city lore and gave us some useful “inside” information for a return trip. Our reservation included a hot buffet breakfast which was the best we’ve experienced at moderately priced hotels. We didn’t mind paying the 15.00 valet charge given the convenience and the accommodating service provided by the valet attendants.
Despite being rather quiet just before Christmas, Savannah is a gem. We took a city tour and fell in love with the dignified charm of regal mansions tastefully decorated for the season with evergreens and ribbons. Not a plastic snowman in sight. Our evening stroll past flickering gas lamps reinforced our intention to visit again. While there are numerous hotels in the historic district, we’ll be staying at the Hilton Garden Inn - it far exceeded our expectations.

My husband and I stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn on Bay for two nights while visiting Savannah. The hotel is within walking distance of River Street and City Market. The hotel staff was excellent. The concierge provided us with great advice on several occasions. She was always busy helping people when we would walk through the lobby. The hotel is undergoing some renovations, but not on the floor we were on. It appeared that they were replacing carpet and redoing walls. Our floor looked brand new. Our room was comfortable and we had a balcony facing Bay Street. I had read that rooms on the Bay Street side were noisy due to street traffic. We were on the 4th floor and had no problem with noise. Highly recommend.

We recently spent 2 nights at this hotel in Savannah. At check-in, we tried unsuccessfully to get a room on the back side of the hotel, away from the main street. I must say that the rooms in this hotel have a significant sound-proofing issue. I believe that it was made worse by having a room with a balcony. The street noise just came loud and clear through the balcony door. The noise coming from the hallway was also noticeable. This is unfortunate because other aspects of the hotel were good: attentive staff, nicely appointed rooms and bathrooms. The breakfast buffet for $10 is one of the values we have seen in a hotel for quite some time. At the end of the day, however, you do want a good night sleep, so I would not stay here unless the hotel can guarantee me a room away from the main street.

Room Tip: Stay away from rooms facing the main road.

I chose this hotel for my mother and I on a girls weekend getaway and was very disappointed with our room. For the price, I was not expecting the room to look 25 years old with no updating. The bathroom had missing caulking and looks old and dirty. I didn't expect five stars but I did expect more of a Hilton property. It was however near all of the attractions which was a huge bonus, but just not up to par versus what you pay per night.

We stayed here for 3 nights and had a great time. You can walk to everything. Only thing I didn't care for was the $15/day valet parking, to me it's just a pain if you want to get something out of the car and if you don't tip well, your vehical will be left outside. There is a car lot right behind the hotel that is lite very well but I didn't check on pricing. Other than that breakfast was good and each floor had a small balcony to go out have a smoke instead of going downstairs.
