Based on the review, we selected the ranch for aurora viewing. But we had very unpleasant and unfriendly treatment, and the owner only cares about money. Don't come here if you are expecting hospitality.

Keith K, Owner at Chandalar Ranch, responded to this reviewResponded March 25, 2018

Chandalar Ranch is a private property and reservations are required. Both our entrances have signs showing "Private Property" " No Trespassing" "Reservation Only"

Coming to our ranch without any notice and reservation, shows that you didn't respect our rules and our paying guests. You were definitely not only unwelcome but also not deserving of service. We asked you politely to leave and you kept sitting in our driveway with your headlights on, which interfered with people taking pictures. We did not want your money, We just wanted you to leave.

If you had an unpleasant experience, it wasn't our fault.

Stayed here during winter to catch the Aurora.

The good:
The location is good for catching the Northern lights, which we did.

They also coordinate or broker various activities like dog sledding, ice fishing, snow mobiles, shooting and more.

The bad:
A lot of people and no sleep. Virtually the entire place is set up like a dorm with multiple rooms off a common area that share bathrooms (including showers).

Combine that with thin walls and people usually coming back late trying to catch the Northern lights and you get no sleep. There's usually some people talking or eating loudly in the common area and the bunk bed rooms draw a lot of younger college age kids.

You can get better, private and quiet rooms cheaper in town and simply drive up to the university (they provide an aurora forecast) nearby to see the lights.

Wouldn't recommend spending the money or the hassle. It's basically a hostel except you pay more than market rates instead of less.

Stayed 3 nights in a newly furbished cabin located away from the main lodge. It has 4 bedrooms with ensuite showers or baths and a fully equipped kitchen (stove top, microwave, oven dishwasher etc) and a dining table that seats 6 comfortably. We were able to prepare our own meals as the lodge doesnt provide this. We went to the main lodge for 2 nights to catch the Aurora but were not able to.
Booked an ice fishing tour n were brought by George (native Eskimo)to the lakes. He drilled holes in the ground n set up tents that fit 4 pax so we could be sheltered from the cold and also could see the glittering fish n bait in the water thru the hole. The tour fare included complimentary snow pants, boots & parkas. There is a public toilet in the area. Our group caught 13 fishes and went back to a cooked dinner with fish(not ours) & rice. Unique experience of a lifetime.

We stayed here for 3 nights and signed up for a article circle tour, 12-hour drive round trip via Dalton hwy. Our guide is the owner of the ranch, Keith, at my grandma's age (70+) and he is really gentle, polite, knowledgeable and willing to share. We were deeply impressed by him!

Wish you and the ranch all the best. I will certainly recommend this place to my friends! If possible, really want to join you guys for a hunting tour (if available) :-)

This place is known for its fantastic views of the Aurora during winter months, however, we stayed here for a Summer Youth Conference and had a great time!! There were about 20 of us, and we stayed from August 4-10. Everyday was sunny and had the perfect temperature between the 70s-80s.

The view is tremendous, absolutely stunning, it looks like a painting. Even after 6 days of looking at the view, it still took my breath away. They have a fully functional kitchen, and 2 bathrooms, 1 for the men and 1 for the women. There's an open field 5 feet from the door. It is on a slight slant, so we walked to the Two Rivers School for basketball, kickball, soccer, frisbee, and mouse-on-ground. In the dining room there was an assortment of puzzles and games, such as Connect 4, which we all had fun with. There is no lake nearby, but the Ranch is only a 30-minute drive to Fairbanks, and we had a day where we went to the Tanana Lakes Recreation Area Swim Beach which was a blast.

The owners, Keith and Velma, are the nicest people on Earth!!! Keith had to come in and fix one of the toilets that kept running, and it took him very little time to fix it. Maggie and George are the managers. They were helpful getting us set up, and then they mostly stayed out of sight. Which was really nice, not to have someone watching over our shoulders. That was a real plus for our group, which made everyone feel like the space was ours, and it empowered everyone to show respect to the place and keep it clean.

All in all, it was a great Youth Conference and I would highly recommend this place!
