Owner description: Thousands of visitors each year get a chance to see muskoxen, caribou and domestic reindeer on summer tours of this 134-acre site set up for nutritional, behavioral and physiological study by the University of Alaska.

I was not going to stay and do the tour, but I changed my mind. The young lady at the gift shop was so nice, we talked up until the time of the tour. The muskox were hilarious. They name each group by a theme (i.e. comics, constellations). It was also amazing to see the muskox charge the fence. There were also reindeer, but they were a little more calm.

Found this by mistake.....it is so exciting to actually be able to see the Muskox. It's not far away from town either. There was also a large herd of reindeer.

love going to this place, the Caribou and Musk-ox are really interesting, because they are so unusual, also able to get up close and personal with them and their coats.

We visited after Labor Day when tours were not available, but it was still worth a visit if you want to catch a glimpse of these impressive animals off-season.
Drive out to the research station not far from the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus, and park outside the double fence. Scan the field with binoculars, especially searching the trees to the left of the large enclosure. With luck and patience you may see the musk ox. There is some information about these animals in the beautiful UA Museum, and a few (expensive) articles of clothing made of their remarkable wool in the museum gift shop. I read that the oxen are fed near the parking fence, but not on the Saturday that we visited.

We took the guided tour after visiting the University Museum and Botanical gardens. These attractions are all in the same area. The LARC is only a short drive from the Botanical gardens. The tours are informative and we enjoyed our tour-$10pp. It is relatively accessible for people with physical disabilities. You do not have to walk a very long way during the tour. There are chairs to sit on but they need to be spread around a bit more, that was the only downside. The animals were hand fed and came up to the fence for easy viewing. 22nd July 2017
