“A great place to visit”

This is such a beautiful and peaceful place. There is a lot of history here and the tours are informative and enjoyable. If you think cemeteries are creepy places then this is not for you.

It has so many famous people there buried and over half a million people are buried there. Great views as it is high up.

“Hanging onto Atmosphere”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 February 2012

One of the United States's great monumental cemeteries, this one deserves an unhurried look. Newcomers should consider taking one of the guided tours. All visitors, new or returning, should also check the cemetery's website for activities and plan a visit--if possible--around Halloween.

“who would think ....”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 February 2012

Last year i had attended a funeral at Greenwod. It was my first time there and as we drove through it, i had thought it was a fascinating place and had wanted to go back to visit under different circumstances. I had learned about "Open House NY" where one weekend a year you can visit some very interesting places to learn about NY history & culture. Greenwood cemetary participated in this event and thought it was the perfect opportunity to visit the cemetary again. Who would think that that this could be facinating??? But it really is fascinating and believe it or not very relaxing and peaceful. During "open house NY" event they had several masoleums and crypts open to go into...Steinway, Whitney among others and guides to give background info. I heard the cemetary provides regular tours, not sure when, but would definately worth looking into to learn about NY history and some of it famous people. My suggestion go early as you'll spend alot of time without even realizing it and definately wear comfortable shoes...very hilly and alot of walking. They did have hop on/off buses during Open House NY weekend which was a great idea because the cemetary is huge.

This used to be the #1 tourist site in New York for picnics! Hundreds of famous people are buried here in a park-like setting. Great for a walking tour.
