I grew up near the park. It has some nice hiking trails and picnic areas. There is also an area for camping. The entrance to the park is about 2 miles from I-95.

The campground itself is just the basics. The individual campsites (at least on the non-scout B loop) are little more than parking spaces with small areas of grass for a tent and a little grill to build a fire. But the easy access to DC is too good to pass up. This tiny park feels secluded but is actually so close off the major highway and even a Metro station that you can be downtown to DC in 30 minutes flat.

drat. we arrived here late in the evening and found a ton of yellow caution tape blocking the entrance to the campground. The only person around to tell us about what was happening was a park police at their headquarters...drat.

hit by Irene...'trees were felled all through the campgrounds', per a park police passing by.

made even 'better' by the fact that I had called the camp HQ and Ranger office three days in a row prior without an answer or even a message about the closure on an answering machine.

When we called recreation.gov (whom we had reserved the site through), they had NO indication/notation that the site was closed...

luckily we found a convenient hotel in DC
phew.

warm welcome from helpful rangers when we arrived. Met a wellbehaved scout group also camping who fed us and lent us equipment. Good facilities and pitches with own fire place. Deer wandering around. Near shops which open late, library with free internet access and very helpful staff. Two nights of very cheap camping.

Me and my wife run here all the time. There are various trails and lots and lots of shade! Bring the bug spray though as this is in prime tick location.
