Maramboi Tented Camp
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 6 March 2011

This permanent tented camp near Tarangire National Park is well off the main road with views of Lake Manyara in the distance. It's a bit offputting when you first turn off to the windy dirt path that leads you to the camp, but once you arrive, it's worth it. As usual, you are welcomed with fresh juice and a few words with the manager. The individual tents surround the main reception either on both sides. We were in #17, the farthest one to the right. The large tents are on platforms with 24 hour electricity available. Maasai guards with bows and arrows escort you to and from your tent once darkness falls. You can easily view zebras, wildebeests and warthogs from this resort. Dinner and breakfasts are served buffet style, and you pack your own box meals, choosing from many options. Just about every box lunch we had the requisite Cadbury milk chocolate bar (smile). This camp, along with the one in Lake Masek (owned by the same man), offers wonderful food and has incredibly friendly staff. We had a afternoon nature walk here with a local guide and got up close to the animals. Wonderful experience. The pool here is also reached by walking along a raised wood walkway. It is solar heated, and a great respite after a hot game drive. The views of the animals are wonderful from this vantage point. Be advised this camp does not accept credit cards. You must pay in cash, either US dollars or Tanzanian shillings for your drinks.

The camp is beautifully located with views towards the Great Rift Valley Escarpment, with zebra and wildebeest grazing on the plains in front of the camp. The tents are very big, with nice verandas overlooking the plains. The pool is a great place to watch the sunset over the Rift Valley with a sundowner, and the food was also good

We stayed here for our first night of safari, virtually straight from England so very tired when we got here. We have done lots of safaris before and we were very happy with this permanent tented camp. The tents are big and we had three singe beds in ours although I think some have doubles and there was a nice big shower and toilet area. There is a veranda outside to laze about on. The tents were not flashy but all that you need with plenty of space and cool in the evening.. The lounge area is very nice, communal veranda also nice and there is a lovely little swimming pool.

When we arrived we were met by the new manageress who gave us a complete briefing and a welcome drink and about one minute later she got a call to say that some cheetahs had been seen behind the tents, " follow me ! " and off we charged, Unfortunately they had gone, but a nice little bit of exitement. Usual rules applied at the camp re.after dark, you had to call for an escort from tent to restaurant and back, but thats normal.

Food was pretty good, packed lunches as good as could be expected. Packed lunches seems to be the thing in Tanzania, maybe it is the distances between places or just to allow more time out and about, in Kenya we have always ended up at a lodge for lunch.

We didn`t have much time in the Tarangire area but we saw loads of Elephant and plenty of other wildlife and also round Lake Manyara was attractive. You are also looking across to the Rift Valley escarpment which you climb on the way to Ngorongoro and Serengeti.

Staff were good and new management were on the ball.

All in all a very nice camp and we would go again.

We started out our safari staying in this tented camp. It is quite a luxurious standard for something called a tented camp. One thing we especially liked about this place is that our safari driver/guide ate all the meals with us. This was not the custom at the other safarihotels. The service was great and the atmosphere as well. Everything is outdoors in the middle of everything. Luckily no lions around that particular day;-)

Good location for visiting Tarangire National Park. Comfortable permanent tents with ensuite. Internet available from reception. Lot's of zebra and warthogs about the place. A nature walk to the lake edge with a ranger is also offerered. The food was variable. Self serve lunch boxes definitely need improvement, specifically presentation and packaging. However, no big deal for me as I didn't pack much any way. I enjoyed my stay at this camp despite the annoying insects bombarding us at dinner time.

The tented camp was amazing. Kind of in the middle of nowhere, the service was great along with the food. You can also take a guided walking tour and walk with the Zebras and Flamingos.

Maramboi has beautiful and huge tented rooms. At night it feels like all the insects in the world are trying to get it. The beds have nets but unfortunately a couple of insects found their way into my bed leading to a restless night. Not the camp's fault though - this is africa after all! The reason I won't choose Maramboi again is the atmosphere. The staff were all very friendly but not in a genuine way - certainly not compared to the other 4 places we stayed on our trip. The lunchboxes were rubbish but that is the same everywhere - the safari camps and lodges need a little advice on how to put together a good lunchbox esp on how to make sandwiches! It neednt be expensive!
