“Peaceful and relaxing.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 June 2012

Very quiet and relaxing. Set in a beautiful area, in a jungle valley. We used the free bikes to explore the surrounding rice patties, very beautiful. Not walking distance to Ubud at all, but they do have a shuttle that goes to and from Ubud twice a day. Upon arrival we were slightly disappointed that our villa smelled musty, althoughh the staff had made an effort to make it smell better. Running the air conditioner for awhile helped this, the next few days of our stay were better. There was some slight mold in the shower. The spa is set near the river, very beautiful. Spa was reasonably priced and were high quality services. People were very very friendly and helpful! I would stay there again.

Room Tip: Villa bima was very large and had a large deck area.

I know that many previous reviewers have called this hotel a paradise. I must say that they are not exaggerating, especially for poor souls like us cooped up in a urban city environment like Singapore.

My wife and I went to Bali looking for a quick escape. We got it and more at Alam Ubud. We stayed 4 nights here and this hotel is the jewel of our entire vacation.

A lot has already been said about the marvelous welcome: the lei, foot soak and welcome drink. The actual experience beats anything that could be described in words. To top it all, the bath was filled with beautiful red flowers. After a long ride from the airport (about 2 hours due to traffic jam), all these gestures were priceless and got us to relax instantly.

The design, layout and location of the property are masterstrokes. The decor, the perfect blending into the surrounding environment is done with great taste and consideration. The sounds of the forest and river, squirrel/bird sightings and cool forest breezes are a treat for city dwellers like us. The whole property is several degrees cooler than the surrounding fields due to the thick forest canopy that towers over all the villas. This escape from the oppressive Bali heat is a joy and without the need for air-conditioning, we could savor the refreshing forest air and sounds a lot more.

The villa is wonderful with abundance of space. Villa Loji (a.k.a Drupadi 2) offers us plenty of privacy. It is incredibly romantic, with a day bed in the huge balcony, seats for the afternoon tea right next to the forest! We felt like we were having another honeymoon, 13 years after we were married :) We did not have a private pool in our villa, but always managed to get the pool at the riverside all to ourselves.

Service at Alam Ubud was top-notch and very genuine, even better than many 5-star establishments we stayed in elsewhere. With shuttle services to Ubud central, it is possible to get the best of both worlds: join buzz and energy in town during the day, while getting away from it for that romantic sunset view at the poolside of Alam Ubud in the evenings.

Our only regret: not spending enough time at the resort. As this was our first visit to Bali, we felt compelled to join the "been there, done it" crowds at the touristy locations like Batur, Uluwatu, Jimbaran bay etc. On hindsight, we would rather forgo the many hours that we spent traveling on small bumpy roads getting from one location to another. There is so much to do at the immediate surroundings of Alam Ubud I did manage to spend a couple of hours on our last evening there cycling to the surrounding padi fields and managed to capture some beautiful photos with Mt Batur and Agung in the background. So, do get out and move about. I am sure there are other gems which I have missed.

We find the menu sufficient for our needs and even though it is a bit pricier than eating out in town, it is not exorbitant. We ate mainly the local dishes and while they would not win any awards, they were well-prepared and enjoyable. The next time we come back to Bali, this is THE place that we would stay and we won't be going anywhere else.

My wife and I stayed here for one night a a special treat and were not disappointed. The cheapest room was still by far the best hotel room we've ever stayed in and the price was excellent compared to staying at a luxury hotel in Australia.

Our room was right down on the river, overlooking the jungle - completely private.

It is a fair way out of town, but if you are looking for peace and quite in a serene location with the option of going into Ubud when you want, then this is a good pick.

Staff were friendly and accommodating, and the food was excellent. The free breakfast enabled us to pick anything off the extensive menu.

15th and 16th century art follows you down to your hotel room, and the gardens are immaculate.

They do an organised Yoga session on Wednesday mornings by the river for 100,000 rupiah ($10). Definitely worth doing as it's a magic spot, although I quickly learnt how inflexible I was.

Wish we had stayed another night!

The villas are nested in the heart of the forest. Very peaceful, tranquil environment. You could hear the running waters from the river as you sit at your balcony, and you're so close to the forest that you could almost touch the trees if you stretch out a bit.

Loved the service by the reception especially. Very warm, friendly and accommodating. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a flower garland and pampered with a foot soak. The rooms were very clean and spacious. The bed so comfortable that we needed motivation to get up. We also did our massages in our villa, which was pricey but not too bad.

The downside to this place was that the breakfast was miserly and boring, and it took 15-20 mins to arrive after ordering. Also, the water heater in our shower seemed to be faulty though the staff were quick to respond to it.

Another thing to note is that because this villa is pretty new and isolated, many taxi drivers do not know the way there. Best to research on the route in advance or at least prepare at number for them to call reception for directions.

The hotel provides 2 free shuttle services to Ubud town, leaving at 1pm and 3pm and returning at 4pm and 9pm, drop off and pick up at the palace. It is a good 20-30mins drive away. Do book with reception in advance as shuttle services only run upon request.

I recommend Villa Bima 1 for maximum privacy and minimal climbing.

This is THE place to stay in Ubud, Bali! My wife and I were exhausted after a 24 hour+ travel time to Bali, and all we wanted was a bed to sleep in - what we found was not just the bed, but the most beautiful, tranquil, secluded, and special villa only 20 minutes out of Ubud village. Like other guests have written you are greeted with a delicious fruit drink, plumeria lei, and a cool foot bath in soothing spring water topped with colorful flower petals! The professional staff seems to quietly anticipate our every move and after getting a drying foot massage, we are brought to our private luxurious villa overlooking the dense tropical jungle and pounding river ravine. Although I want to just sleep off the jet lag, I take a brief stroll around the property to take in the awesome villa property we have booked for the next 4 days....I won't spoil the effect of the surprises you will discover at every turn...there are many! You'll find a quiet,, shady tourquise spa pool with massage therapy gazebos and flowing fresh spring water at the bottom of the 224 steps to the boulder-studded jungle river; secluded Hindu shrines tucked into secret niches; tropical birds and butterflies; amazing, wild, and lush landscaping; private dining gazebos and lounging seats in the best places...it keeps getting better, believe me! We decided to return to Alam Ubud for our final 3 days, after our 3 week trip to other parts of Bali and Lombok. The staff takes their responsibility seriously, but in the most friendly and helpful way. Dewi, Asst. manager; Puspa and Ayu, Reception staff; Oka, waiter; and Made, General Manager; and many others, too numerous to list here, deserve the special recognition for their exceptional professional and friendly efforts to make our vacation the best! As innkeepers in the USA (and TA business partners) we know what to look for and we found it! Thank you, Alam Ubud! Phil & Patsy, Inverness Secret Garden Cottage B&B, Inverness, Calif. USA

p.s. I noted that one reviewer mentioned "no rice paddy fields"? I guess they didn't get up in the quiet dawn hours and use the complimentary bicycles (or walk) to the Alam Ubud entrance, and then spend several hours visiting the surrounding incredible rice fields (with views to the distant Volcano Agung and central Bali mountains, two small farming villages, and a hidden Hindu temple...all this and then return to a delicious breakfast overlooking the sky blue infinity pool. These rice fields are equal to the UNESCO protected rice fields in central Bali, if you are not able to travel several hours to see them, but without the crowds of tourists and vehicles.

Room Tip: Ask the staff to take you around to several villa rooms; they are all beautiful, but some are cool a...
