We first liked the place, a beautiful colonial building with character. Only to realise later it was miserable. No heating in the lounge or the room (and it gets really cold!!!). Just enough lighting. The manager was too busy watching sport on TV. Wifi very slow. We spent a cold night and we left.

Room Tip: Don't bother until there is a new management.

Stayed here for 2 nights in July. Location is within walking distance of the centre of town. The actual building is beautiful inside, so much could be done here. Rooms were big and with fireplace. We asked for a double bed, we got 2 twins pushed together and separate sheets and a tiny blanket (it was cold when we were there) but no biggie. We tried the fireplace, we paid 800rupees for kindling (no logs) that burnt out in 10 minutes. The showers were hot but the shower curtain only went down to our knees so every time we showered the whole floor of the bathroom flooded. And worst part of our stay was that the walls are paper thin, meaning we woke up every morning at 4:30am because thats when the guests next door did. We had laundry done as soon as we arrived, they had nearly 3 days to dry it but when we got it back it was still wet.
The staff were disinterested and bored, probably because it was low season? The manager spent a lot of time sleeping on the couch at the front door. They offer wifi but it doesn't work but I know its not easy to get wifi in that location.
Really this place is laughable (in like a Faulty Towers way), having worked in hospitality for a number of years, I know this place could be so much better.

We were on a guided tour, accommodation booked for us. Our feeling about this hotel is to some effect influenced by the weather, which was cool and wet, rather like our home town, Glossop. Our room was rather charming - quaintly old-fashioned with interesting furniture and lots of dark polished wood. It was distinctly chilly. We asked for a fire to be lit, it was , then we were asked for 600R - about £2. The fire went out after 5 minutes, but was started again by the helpful room boy. The fire did warm the room but by the time we went to bed it was again cool and there was only one thin blanket on the bed. We spent a cold night - not what you expect in Sri Lanka. There should have been spare blankets in the room. Our evening meal was very uninspiring. The only time in our holiday that we were not offered a Sri Lankan option. It was nice to have the use of a lounge, but again this was cool and gloomy. Finally there was a smell of cigarettes about the place. Its a pity because the place does have potential.

The Grosvenor has a good bit of old time (colonial) atmosphere along with clean rooms and a quiet location just off the main road at the edge of town. It's a 10-15 minute walk to the heart of "downtown" or the Grand Hotel, an important attraction. I first landed in another, more expensive hotel closer to the center and bailed out after seeing a rat in the dining room! No rats here. Breakfast was okay; did not have dinner here, as there was a very good and inexpensive restaurant a 3 minute away at the corner of the main road.

Tripadvisor will not accept a review unless all the circles below are filled in; this is unfortunate and is a serious flaw, as many places simply do not have fitness centers or pools! One of the choices should be "N/A."

Room Tip: No such advice.

We are on tour. This is our 6th night on Sri Lanka. A few hotels behind us. This is so far our favorite one. Very nice architecture, good service, with honest smile, not a trained one. We have got room with a fireplace. And we use it, it is a bit expensive to buy a wood but it is worth to spend a few dollars.

Room was clean. Hot water is Available. We Recommend this hotel.

Definately a nice building originally, but overall we would not recommend staying here, and definately not eating here. We had the worst meal ever, and we went to bed hungry in cold room, and almost did not sleep.
The staff is a group of Young boys running and playing in The halls, and dont know anything about service or cooking. Weird place!

My wife and I spent one night here because we were doing the Worlds End hike and it was close to drive there. BIG MISTAKE!!! We arrived to a cold, dark and damp room. We asked for towels and when they brought them, they were still wet and had a weird smell to them. We were unpacking to settle in for the night when a staff member came and asked us if we wanted dinner from the restaurant and we said "In a little bit" he then told us we only had an hour to put an order in this was at 5pm. After that we would not be able to have dinner at the hotel. We decided to pass and eat somewhere else outside the hotel. After we came back from strolling around Nuwara Eliya and getting something to eat, we had someone come by and ask us if we wanted to have a fire in the fire place to keep warm. We of course said yes seeing that it was cold in the area, that's when we found out it cost 600 rupees to have the fire. He came back and started the fire it warmed up a little bit in the room. We decided then to take a shower when we came to the stunning truth that there was no hot water here either, already cold we had to stomach the cold shower. When we came out the fire was dieing and I discovered then that the wood he left us to keep warm for the night only would last us about 45 minutes. So we spent a very cold, damp night in this hotel.

My opinion is find another hotel, this place is severely out dated in much need of a face lift and something to brighten it up. The staff needs some training seeing it was impossible to find any when we did need something. There "bar" has nothing but juice, water and soda no alcohol at all. The beds were hard, rooms were dark and depressing. Least favorite place we stayed at of the 7 hotels we stayed in.
