Every once in a while my taste buds get tickled in a wonderful way. Saffron, a tiny takeout off Regent St. in Madison was a really pleasant surprise. It has a picnic table outside and only a few tables inside. Its menu is very limited but changes daily. It is also incredibly inexpensive. Every dish is $6 with a specialty drink another $1.50. My dish was a combination platter with some kind of delicately cooked yellow rice, a vegetable/meat ball and eggplant. The latter was amazingly delicate and just melted in my mouth. The meal had lots of subtle perfectly balanced spices. Nothing overwhelmed. We all left fully sated. The chef says she prepares everything from fresh ingredients and tries to make the food not just tasty but healthy. That is a switch from most restaurants where we often leave having enjoyed a guilty pleasure. Here it was all pleasure. There were six in our group and we all look forward to going back.
