Description: The cuisine at August is contemporary French with a focus on local ingredients, inspired by Chef John Besh's classical training here and in Europe, and by the depth of his own Southern Louisiana roots. August is located in an historic 19th century French-Creole building in New Orleans' Central Business District. August was a semifinalist for the 2012 and 2013 James Beard Awards Outstanding Restaurant, and has been selected by Gayot as a top 40 Restaurant in the United States. The Times Picayune has named it as one of their top 10 Restaurants the last two years in a row.

I recently added Restaurant August to my list of restaurants to visit while in New Orleans and I must say, it did not meet our expectations, primarily because the service was below par. We arrived at 9:30 for our reservation and waited just a bit for our table. When we were seated, our waiter came over pretty quickly and asked us if we had any questions about the menu. I asked about the gnocchi, and if they could prepare it without the crabmeat for my husband. The waiter said yes, absolutely, and then never returned for drink orders. In addition, he was rude and walked away while we were talking to him. We were served the gnocchi (which was delicious) but the waiter never came back until it was time to bring the check. Finally, the bus person took our order and took care of us. What was kind of hard to take was when the waiter walked up to the four top next to us and carefully described each dish, joked and laughed with the table, while we were sitting with an empty plate of gnocchi between us and no drinks - nothing but water.
The food seemed OK, but the experience was so clouded by the service, I am not even sure if I can be objective.
The next day, on a walk back from the Garden District, we ran into another couple who visited New Orleans often. When we told them of our experience at Restaurant August and they said that they also had bad service and would not be returning. I hope the management wakes up on this issue. It is a beautiful restaurant and could be so much better than it is.

An incredible experience! Every bite was wonderful. There were six of us and we agreed this was our best meal in New Orleans, even tho not the most expensive. (It was expensive, do not expect otherwise. There is a much less expensive lunch.) Our waiter dexcribed the menu items in wonderful detail, was just friendly enough. The additional touches of the amuse bouche (in an egg shell) and the dessert tray at the end exceeded our expectations. I highly recommed August for your splurge meal in NOLA.

The best meal we had on our recent trip to NOLA. Romantic ambience, great service and excellent food! A bit pricey, but well worth the splurge for a memorable meal. We also dined at The Grill Room ( a four-star/Diamond rated establishment) in the Windsor Court Hotel across the street, and Restaurant August superseded that experience! Highly recommended.

Our last meal during almost a week full of great meals turned out to be one of the best. The service was great and the food was fantastic. We were served two special lagniappes... an egg custard with roe appetizer and small dessert samples.

There are enough local joints and inexpensive restaurants in New Orleans that you don't really have to go for "fine dining" to have great food, but if you do want to go higher-end, this is definitely a place to go. Have only eaten here once, but it was amazing from start to finish. Can't remember the exact names of the dishes but started with an appetizer of pork belly and oysters, main course was stuffed shrimp and dessert was a chocolate napoleon with salted toffee ice cream. Delicious. One of the best meals I've eaten in New Orleans.
