“Old Algiers - Awesome”
Reviewed 20 May 2012 via mobile

Staying in Old Algiers at the House of the Rising Sun is special.  Here's why:

- Kevin, Wendy, Boudin and the small town friendliness make you feel welcome
- The house is small, but very nice
- breakfast is light (mostly fruit) and appreciated after eating fried food at most other meals
- 5 minute walk to the ferry
- parking is easy
- quiet and quaint relative to staying in the quarter

I have visited New Orleans on many occasions over the years but this was the first time that I had stayed in Algiers. The tranquillity of the neighbourhood offers a most refreshing change while being just a seven minute free ferry ride away from the better known attractions of the city.

The hospitality offered by Kevin and Wendy is of the highest order and the room and all other facilities were everything that I could have wished for. As well as being president of the Algiers Historical Society, Kevin has an extensive knowledge of the local music scene and, as such, can offer invaluable advice to help you plan your activities.

The Crown & Anchor English pub (other bars and eateries are available) is just a couple of hundred yards down the road and provides a marvellous repose at the end of what can be energy-sapping days. The regulars there have an uncanny ability to allow newcomers to find their own level of involvement.

Thanks for the wonderful review! It has taken you a while to come and stay in Algiers Point instead of the French Quarter but glad you enjoyed the neighborhood so much. As a welcome guest from Merry Olde England, we hope to see you next year for Jazz Fest.

What a fabulous place. Not only is this a great b&b it's in a fabulous neighbourhood.

Want to chat about the history of NOLA or discuss music, they are there; want to sit on the swing and read a book in peace and quiet, you got it.

Minutes from the ferry and chaos of the East side, Algiers Point is a haven of neighbourly bliss.

Good pubs, great places to eat, friendly people and gorgeous steets. The "house of the rising sun" is perfectly positioned to take both sides of nola into your vacation.

The house reminds me of my grandparents place, and that's a good thing, it's stuffed full of memories, artefacts, curios and books - in a way only a lifetime of interesting living can create.
Guest rooms are spacious, with large comfortable beds. You're provided with towels, Bathrobes, water and a lovely breakfast each morning. The place is lovely and clean and very comfortable.

Boudin, the dog (i think that is cajun for "wee pudding"!) is a charmer and will try his best to part you from your breakfast.

If you like genuine hospitality, a comfy and cosy retreat, a comfy bed and a happy dog then stay here - if we are ever back in NOLA we'll be back here again.

No wonder this B&B has a top ranking at tripadvisor.
Located in beautiful and quiet Algiers point it's the perfect location for exploring NOLA.
Leave your car parked right outside and walk to the free ferry around the corner.
The ferry takes you to downtown New orleans in a couple of minutes without the hassle of having to find a parking space.Kevin who runs the B&B is a very knowledgeable man when it comes to the history of new orleans, the music or it's surroundings.
He gave us great tips about a nearby plantation house and a bayou called Jean lafitte.
If only he would have told me about a shoe cleaning scam which happens downtown.
If some one approuches you and says "i know where you got those shoes" just ignore that person and keep on walking to keep your money in your pocket!
House of the rising sun only has two rooms so make sure to book a room well in advance!

Room Tip: The queen room has an en-suite bathroom.

In the past three years, we have traveled to New Orleans 7 times and each time we stay in a different hotel. Last August we ventured across to Algiers Point on the ferry for an afternoon adventure and discovered the charm of Algiers. When we returned to N.O. for the Final Four in March/April, we changed pace and stayed here at the House of the Rising Sun for five days. It lived up to everything that has been written about it here on TripAdvisor. Driving to and from the house was easy whether it was on the ferry or across the bridge. Many times, we just left the car for the day rather than deal with the hassle of parking in N.O. Kevin was a wonderful host who offered suggestions for adventures off the beaten path--Museum of Fine Art in City Park as well as the sculpture garden nearby, Frenchman Street for music as well as a swamp tour (a bit touristy but that close to N.O. is it what I expected). I especially enjoyed our discussions about local history and genealogy. All in all, a great place to stay if you really want to sink your teeth into the real New Orleans and discover the city at a slower pace. There is so much more to the city than evenings on Bourbon Street. Enjoy!

We had a beautiful five day stay with Kevin and Wendy. Felt like we were visiting with old friends. The rooms are delightfully decorated in a homey / comfy style. Clean as a whistle, with all the amenities you could want. The best breakfast, fabulous recommendations from our hosts and quiet privacy when you want it, or engaging conversation when you want that too. The perfect location is a block and 1/2 from the ferry that takes you into the center of town. I will return in a heartbeat and have already recommended it to friends.

Room Tip: All rooms are excellent. It's in a quiet neighborhood

The House of the Rising Sun provides a very pleasant respite from what could be considered the hustle and bustle of New Orleans. It’s location is very easy to find by car and we were able to virtually park at the front door which made for very quick and easy unloading since our arrival was in the pouring rain.
We were greeted by Kevin who immediately offered us hot tea or coffee, which was very nice, and by a lovable dog, Boudin, (pronounced Boo Dan!) who made a perfect companion during our stay.
The rooms are pleasantly decorated, comfortable and very quiet. The bathroom for the queen room is “en suite” and for the king room is just down the hall.
The ferry ride is an easy two block walk away which made it great for exploring the French Quarter during the day, coming “home” to freshen up and then go back in the evening if you want but there are plenty of places to eat and be entertained right in the neighborhood!
Next time we’d like to stay longer so we can take advantage of Kevin’s walking tour of Algiers Point and all the entire neighborhood has to offer!
Great place to stay...try it, you'll like it!
