“One of my favorite places in Guatemala”
Reviewed 21 February 2012

I love Uaxactun and the ancient observatory there, reputed to be the place where the Maya perfected their calendar. The ruins are very peaceful, magical and off the beaten track of tourism. I also really like the community of Uaxactun which is a subsistence community, without regular electricity and piped water. There is one telephone (shared by the community), no internet and no hot water . At the same time Compamento El Chiclero, while basic accommodation, is comfortable, clean and friendly. Amazingly, there is also a free museum at the hotel with an exceptional collection of ancient ceramic items. .The owner, Neria Herrara, is a native of Uaxactun, and has long been involved in promoting and educating others about Petén and Uaxactun. The food is excellent as well with the most flavorful tortillas ive eaten in guatemala. do bring mosquito repellant as in all parts of Peten.

A friend and I spent most of the day exploring Tikal, while leaving our packs at the Visitors' Center for 1 Quetzal an hour each with the plan of spending the night at Uaxactun. When we took the 3 PM chicken bus from Tikal, we knew that we would have little time to see just one portion of the Uaxactun ruins.

Following an interesting jungle chicken bus ride, much of it in Tikal Park, we got off at the Uaxactun comedor and walked up the hill on the road alongside the old air strip to Campamento El Chiclero.

We arranged for two rooms there and left our packs in them. The owner, Neria Herrera, offered to have supper ready for us when we got back and gave us three options. So we ordered pollo a la plancha, which turned out to be very tasty.

We saw the portion of the ruin site that is up toward the cemetery and might have been able to see part of the other sections, but we were a bit tired from Tikal and the thought of food awaiting us sounded better and better.

We got back to very good food and some cold beer. We also spent some time exploring the museum.

I wasn't sure how to rate this hotel above. It is a very friendly, though basic hotel, but it is the best of three places in town. It has very good food and a wonderful museum right there on the grounds. At 60Q, it is not expensive to stay there and I slept well.

We hopped the 6 AM bus back toward Tikal, but we were going all the way to Santa Elena. We had to meet someone and there were things to do in Flores or we could have spent more time at Tikal before heading back. By getting on the bus in Uaxactun, we were able to get great seats in front to watch the jungle as we passed through it on the way to Tikal.

There are two buses to and from Uaxactun each day. The morning ones leave at 6 and 6:30. The afternoon ones to there leave Santa Elena at 1 and 2:30 and Tikal at 3 and 4:30.

  • Liked — supper.
  • Disliked — no hot water, but I didn't expect it.
