“Good location, quiet, but expensive”
Reviewed 28 February 2011

We (my husband and 13 year old son) stayed for a week in Castello Falkner to ski. The location is good. It's a short walk to one of the main gondela's (there are 2 different ones in Solden). The rooms were spacious (rooms 217 and 218), quiet, and each one had a nice balcony. In general service was good. Unfortunately there was no wifi in the room although the Internet could be accessed with a cable.

We didn't particularly like the 'feel' of the hotel. It was a bit 'kitsch' (with painted on ornaments etc). What we really didn't like was that all the meals were included. The food was just average and we did not enjoy the music evening or gala dinner.

Overall: it's certainly not a bad place to stay but too expensive. It would be a big improvement if it would be possible to book without all the meals included.

It's situated near the lifts, just 2 min. The dinner and service are very poor, they don't have enough quantity of waiters, we had to wait our dinner for 2 hours. It's terrible. But they have very nice and cosy yard with flowers and bushes. I liked to drink champaign in this yard vewing the mountaines in september.

My wife and I have traveled to Austria five times to hike. We've always stayed at 4-star hotels and our experience at the Hotel Castello Falkner was our best. The staff was friendly, helpful, fun and funny! Our suite was large and very clean. The food was very good, the spa area very nice. While the indoor/outdoor pool was a little chilly, it was a good size for doing laps. Soelden is a beautiful area and the hotel staff found great hikes and other activities for us to do. We will go back again next year and stay longer than the three days we stayed this time.

That was my third stay in this hotel, but i have to say it was the last. Everything was all right, nice and cozy hotel, service is average (well, this is a ski resort). Food in restaurant is not bad, but I do not like when halfboard is obligatory thing for the hotel, prefer own choice rather than fixed menu. Also it was heavily overpriced, we have paid above 500 euro for one night for two adults and two kids. But it would not be all bad unless the main reason for disappointment - treatment of kids. I had two sons with me. My 13 years old boy had to stay in room for a day being sick and not able to go in mountains with us. I told him to ask for food and drink at the bar when he is hungry, but he was rejected when he tried it! with explanation that adults only can sign the bill for our room, and he spent all day with no food! I was very mad about it, but it was my fault as well, so I kept it with me. Later this day, during dinner, my younger kid was playing with daughter of my friend in reception area (may be bit loud and all but they are kids). The guy, calling himself "THE OWNER!" claimed it to me. We had a quick quarrel, and he declared that he does not care that I am a client and pay money, because he is THE OWNER and he makes rules in the hotel. It was enough for me, so I will never stay in this hotel anymore (though THE OWNER still does not care much about it, i think...).
Do not go there with small kids. Otherwise is ok, though I wouldn't also recommend their steak house, quality is very average and service is not good.

Don't get me wrong, this is a very nice cute hotel. When I looked at the website though and compared this rate with other hotels rated I expected a luxery hotel.
They charged us nearly 150 Euros per person per Night including breakfast, afternoon tea and dinner. This hotel is definitely a four star hotel, and if they would charge 100-120 Euros a night I would give it 4 points here, but they are just way too expensive. Let me list the good and bad sides of the hotel here.
+
3 meals a day, you will never be hungry
+ very very clean hotel, everything looks like new
+ pretty close to the slope
+ room to lock away skis
+ very good breakfast and afternoon tea
+ the hotel is very quiet, which guarantees a good night sleep

-
the pool in the wellness area is way too cold to use in the winter and the wellness area is very small and crowded and only open from 3pm -7pm (when afternoon tea and dinner is served)

the dinner is not very good

drinks are very expensive

-the service is not 4 star quality, it is ok though

-the views of the hotels are quite average

- there are no austrians there (which is not a bad or good thing, but it told me that austrians would not book this place, it is more a rip off for the swiss, french, russian,.... people who don't know the local prices so well)

So again, if the hotel would be more reasonably priced I would give it 4 stars, because you can't expect everything from a four star facility, but for the price they charge, they don't offer enough.
