A nicely landscaped property, private with a fence, in a quiet neighborhood only a couple blocks from restaurants. Wonderfully comfortable king bed even In freezing weather without heat the first day and night. Antony was out of town, but after the first night he arranged to have the pilot light relighted in the one gas heater in the living room. Contractor and repairman Ray, who was great, said the pilot light often blows out, but this time that did not work until Ray also quickly replaced the thermostat. Fortunately, the house also had a small space heater, which always kept the bathroom comfortably useable. I appreciate Antony having had the space heater available, since we don't like winter camping even though we're from Minnesota.
Ray also kindly gave us access to the washer and dryer in a shed behind the house. They are listed as available under house amenities, but the shed was locked. In the shed was something I had never seen--a dryer held together with duct tape. On our fourth day we finally tried to do laundry and use the hot tub. The washer worked OK. The dryer did not work at all except making electric sparking noises, which made us more uncomfortable since the hot tub pump in shed leaked a quarter inch deep water puddle, including under the dryer (the dryer did not work even before the water leak). After an hour we turned off the hot tub pump since the water was not heating at all. The house instructions mentioned a hot tub cover, but we could not find one, so the hot tub also had sand in it. Fortunately, the house has clothes lines in the back, and our washed clothes quickly dried the dry desert air (the house could use a few more clothes pins, however). The house could also use a new sofa in the living room, which looks OK, but has no real springs or other seating support anymore.
We complained about our stay to the travel booking agency we used, asking the host for a $100 refund due to the problems. The host sent me a note saying my husband and I are treating him and his wife like "servants" because we expect the listed house amenities to work. He refused to give us any refund, but the booking agency did give us a $100 credit,
This could have been a very nice place to stay, certainly reasonably priced. But I would suggest the host and his wife charge a bit more for the house so that they can afford at least a new clothes dryer and hot tub cover.
Anthony's place exceeded my expectations… Everything was fantastic and there were many small touches that were so appreciated. My niece and I stayed there and went into Joshua Tree National Park - it was a great spot in terms of ease into the park itself. I'll definitely return next spring!!
