Horrible experience

1.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jul 20, 2024
Horrible experience. A water pipe broke in my room. Instead of relocating us, the hotel manager refused to offer any help. We were left in a damp, uncomfortable room with no compensation or apology. To make matters worse, they charged us $20k for their mistake. The lack of professionalism and concern for guests' comfort is unacceptable. I strongly advise against staying at this hotel.

Reviewed July 10, 2024

I waited a few weeks to write this review, mostly to let my entire vacation sink in, and to attempt to pair down the voluminous accolades and comments running through my head regarding the magical Kona Village. First, I should explain that am one of "those" guests who experienced the old Kona Village back in my early 20's, albeit only for one night and in the lowest price room. As a broke Kama'aina living in Oahu for a year, I took advantage of the resident discount to splurge on a 24 hour stay. Like the rest of us who witnessed the old KV, I was skeptical and overwhelmingly curious about whether the new hotel could possibly maintain the perfectly laid back, unapologetically quirky, yet luxurious vibe from before. Well, all I can say is....you NAILED it Rosewood. Partially stealing a description from a recent Conde Nast article, the new and improved Kona Village is that perfect mix of luxurious and laid back, and no other high end resort in Hawaii or even the world does this far too rare vibe better. Can you appreciate and enjoy the finest things in life without feeling compelled to don designer clothes and consume 5 star dinners each night? The answer is definitively yes at Kona Village, as here you can be who you are, eat what you eat, do what you do, and still be 100% pampered, respected, cared for and recognized.

I always gravitate toward reviews that mention the people who work at a hotel. For anyone who has read my few and far between past posts, you will recall that my husband and I treasure the "people" we meet during our travels above anything else. With this in mind, and knowing already that Hawaiians in general are the friendliest people on the planet, I came armed to KV with the intention of asking the current employees what THEY thought of their new employer and the new hotel in general, and the answers I received were honest, authentic, and affirming. Time and again, staff told us that Rosewood is always working to maintain the ethos of the old KV, is committed to their employees' wellness and job-security, is giving more than lip service to eco and cultural preservation initiatives, and is generally a great employer to work for. This job satisfaction was demonstrated daily in how staff interacted with guests and each other, and unlike so many resorts, each employee's individual personality shined through which was SO important. There was no predictable script being followed by the KV "family," and you really felt like you got to know the individuals who worked there before you left. It was more then knowing names, and instead about getting to know the person. I stress again, this is extremely rare for staff in a 5 star hotel/resort, and it is the top reason we will be back.

Now onto some but certainly not all of my favorite things. Our Hale (by request) was located quite some distance from the main hub of the Village (pools, restaurants, beachfront), which was the best decision ever (hey Rosewood, remember that we want a similar Hale when we come back please:-). Riding the bikes to and from our Hale was as close to "no-stress" as I have been in over 30 years. I found myself finding excuses to go back to the Hale just so I could ride the road, say Aloha to the staff and other guests, to feel the sun and wind on my face, and to not have a care in the world. Then there was the beach staff - so professional and kind, and always at the ready with a towel, snorkel gear, kayak or SUP, yet never, ever even the slightest bit pushy and always genuinely friendly. A surprising plus was the fantastic gym and wonderful lap pool that allowed me to get in an amazing swim one morning. Many five star hotels have nice workout facilities, but KV manages to incorporate their immaculately maintained gym and lap pool into the surroundings so you do not feel like you are missing out on Hawaii's or KV's beauty. If I have one regret, it is that we spent too much time traversing the island and sightseeing, and not enough "down time" at the resort to relax and enjoy other activities on offer (early morning snorkel or canoe out to see dolphins, breakfast each morning at Moana, spending more time at Shipwreck bar, etc.). From a food perspective, the Kahuwai Cookhouse and Market is the true star, if for no other reason than so few luxury resorts have the foresight to include informal eateries in their design plan, let alone ones with a stand alone juice/breakfast bar and snack stand that are open all day and night. What an important option for families with small kids, couples on the go for island sightseeing, folks who by design or delay return to the resort too late to commit to a formal dinner, or anybody just wishing for a quick bite on the go. For a definitively 5 star hotel company like Rosewood, the choice to incorporate this perhaps less lucrative food and drink option was bold - and oh so welcome.

Was everything perfect - heck no, but whoever expects it to be is (1) never happy with anything so bound to find something wrong no matter where they are; (2) has never stayed at a relatively new hotel who understandably needs time to work out kinks and make adjustments; and (3) simply did not stop to "feel" Kona Village or live on island time, which is the whole point. What mattered for us was that Kona Village never hesitated to address whatever was not perfect, and with kindness and class. This is and will continue to be my definition of perfection, and the new and improved KV has this in spades.

Finally, between my husband and I, we have 6 adult kids, so we have done our time traveling with little ones and were happy to be on an adults only trip. With that said, we knew Kona Village always was and continues to be family friendly, and had no advance concerns with that concept. With that said, I was completely surprised and amazed at how calm, relaxed, chill and relatively quiet the resort was at all times, and although I saw and heard plenty of kids around all parts of the resort during our stay, the resort/hale layout, plentiful open space, abundance of activities and amenities and overall relaxed vibe meant that even the most child-averse, adults-only guest had absolutely no reason to complain about having children around. I am not sure how Rosewood managed this feat, but it is one of the many elements of the old Kona Village that stood the test of time. I truly felt the wahi pana of this beautiful place, and the "pulse of the land" was magically preserved. We will with absolute certainty be back!

Room tip: Breakfast at Moana is not to be missed (but not cheap).

Kona Village is the absolute best way to experience the Big Island--far from the crowds and nestled in the area of the island with the absolute best weather. If you're reading this you are probably torn between Kona Village and the Four Seasons. Kona Village is a no brainer unless you are in Hawaii to golf because aside from the greens, the FS property cannot compete with Kona Village's charm, history and layout, all of which is quintessential Hawaiian.

Our hale was beautifully appointed and the service is what one would expect from a 5 star hotel--I had a craving for a white chocolate macadamia nut cookie while I was at the shipwreck bar. Although not on the menu, the waitress said she'd chase one down for me and when she discovered that none had been baked that day, they threw some in the oven and delivered them to my hale later that evening, free of charge. Not only were they the most delicious cookies I've ever had, but I really appreciated the gesture.

Room tip: Rent a car!

The just is no other place like Kona Village. The rooms (Hales)are wonderful. Perfectly furnished and incredibly comfortable.

The beach is second to none on the island, beautiful white sandy and crystal blue water. Just what you go to Hawaii for. Two wonderful restaurants each their own unique menus and vibe.

We can hardly wait to go back

Built on the ruins of the old Kona Village resort and completely updated (with mostly new construction), this 5 star resort has a lot of things going for it. Affordability is not one of them. However, much of it is stunning and we had a good time here. (It would have been better but there were quite a few hiccups during our stay… it hadn’t been open too long at that point… and I’m assuming they’ve been resolved in the last few months. That said, the staff and management was highly decent about remedying all the issues that popped up in a timely fashion).
Located right next door on the beach to the Four Seasons on the Big Island, it feels like you’re on a completely different island when you’ve arrived, somewhere in the distant South Seas. I liked that part of it. The driveway to the hotel is long and winding and takes you through some arid hills before you arrive to the… dirt road! It’s very authentic feeling if a little… dirty. Some may be put off by the ruggedness but it’s always been part of the charm. I only walked by the original Kona Resort a few years before a hurricane knocked it down and it was basically falling apart even then… this is nothing like that.
Check-in was friendly and luxe… we sat on a couch while they did the paperwork. The vibe here is looser than a lot of pricey resorts and more laid back. Not a problem. Alas, we originally booked a 2 bedded room… which as far as I can tell means you get the spare room of a larger suite. You feel like the poor relative visiting someone fancier, which is a bit ironic at this price point. This did not work for us. At all. I did not come all this way to share a wall and the descriptions online are rather deceptive. The appeal of this place is (most) every room is its own unit… or hale. Except when you ask for 2 beds. So we went back to the desk and asked for a one bed individual hale. Which we got. Alas, it took a few hours of a spectacular sunset to get.
All the hales are beautiful and many have ocean views… albeit through trees. One section of the hotel is more arid and on a lava field and not on the beach. I’m sure when the landscaping grows in it’ll look better and less dried out. A final section of hales are on a lagoon facing the mountains.
There’s a lot of charm to this place… the original Shipwreck bar remains (only spiffed up)… but the dining options are a bit limited. Breakfast was good and is served in the main restaurant… and for the most part, the servers were very nice, as were the hosts. But there was one female server (a bit larger than the others) who had the most on/off personality I’ve ever seen and a hair trigger temper. You wanted to stay on her good side. Which I didn’t want to have to do at these prices. I think everyone knows who she is.
Lunches are tricky. You’re limited to these grilled cheese sandwiches from a little coffee stand off the lobby, room service or a full (aka high) priced lunch in the restaurant. We ended up walking to the Four Seasons… a bit of a schlep… to get normal sandwiches (say, tuna or ham) to go from their shop in the parking lot. Dinners are also rather pricey but you can get more grilled cheesy things relatively late into the evening, which is what we usually ended up doing. They weren’t bad… there just wasn’t a lot of variety. I appreciated that option, anyway.
Parking is a long way away from most hales… you can self-park, which we did. And there are free bikes you can ride around on the property. There are two pools… one more for families and kids near the lobby… and the adult pool by the Shipwreck bar. They do try to steer guests to the most appropriate pool when you check in, which I appreciated, too.
When we left, we were treated very well by the staff who made a fuss (as I said, we had a few hiccups and got to know everyone a little better than on a more typical stay). That very thoughtful farewell made a great, lasting impression. I give them high marks for it. A few individuals on the staff I’d like to mention who made our stay nicer in various ways: Jesa, Rami, Shannon, Kristi and Jason. I wish I got a few more names, but hey, I was on island time and didn’t have my phone with me all the time.
If you want to go back in time yet stay with all the modern luxe appointments in a slightly and intentionally dusty, rustic environment… I would give this place a try. I hope to return one day soon and enjoy it when it’s a smooth-running operation… which it probably already is.

Room tip: Be prepared to spend a lot! And avoid 2 bedded rooms unless you want to share a hale with others. (Behind locked doors, but still...)

We just returned from a trip to Kona Village. From the moment you drive onto the property with white sand driveways, green lawns and palm trees you know you are somewhere special. We've stayed at many beautiful resorts on the Big Island including the Four Seasons Hualalai, as well as the Four Seasons Beach Resort and Sensei on Lanai, and several others on Oahu, but Kona Village is now our very favorite.

Upon arrival we were greeted by Daniel Scott (Regional Manager), Maria Jose Rodriguez (Resort Manager), and a delicious tropical cocktail. Check In was quick and the staff was so friendly and welcoming. We were driven to our hale by golf cart and shown where the gym, spa, restaurants and a secluded beach (with the most amazing sealife) are located. The decor inside our hale was beautiful and had everything we needed. There are no TVs but you can use your laptop or ask the front desk if they have a one to use. WiFi is excellent. The welcome refreshments in our room were a nice touch to enjoy on the huge lanai before lunch.

We enjoyed several meals at the Kahuwai, Moana (where the french toast with vanilla cream is a must) and at the beach. By far the most enjoyable meal was the Island Roots dinner. It takes place on Tuesdays and Saturdays, located in a secluded area near the gardens surrounded by kiawe trees. The food is all locally sourced. Cocktails and appetizers were served upon arrival, followed by dinner which was explained by Chefs Kai and David. The menu included salad and vegetables from the garden, locally caught fish and lobster, kalua pig with cabbage, and other items. Dessert was presented by the pastry chef who described her fabulous creations. Cocktails and several white and red wines were served with dinner. Seating is communal, giving us the opportunity to meet other guests who were first timers like us, as well as those who have been coming to the resort for over 40 years.

With the beach, pools and restaurants we never left the property. We used the bikes to get around, it was so much fun. Bikes are parked everywhere, you just take one to ride around the resort or to/from your hale. The resort is easily walkable but you can always call to have someone in a golf cart pick you up. We played pickleball and tennis. Rackets, paddles and balls are available anytime, along with water and fruit. The gym is great and has cardio equipment outside to enjoy the views.. The spa is beautiful. There is an activity shack to get snorkel gear, paddleboards, kayaks, etc. Everything is included along with other planned activities like canoe rides, snorkeling adventures, and cultural classes. There are also cooking and fitness classes with nominal fees. Check the schedule in your room and book as soon as possible. The big beach in front is a great snorkeling spot, you'll see so many fish and sea turtles, but for me the little beach/cove has the best snorkeling, it’s like being in an aquarium.

We had a wonderful time at Kona Village and look forward to our next visit. Thanks to the entire staff, especially Maria, for making our stay so memorable.
