“Nicest Beach Near Kona”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 November 2012

Kua Bay is easy to miss, if you're not paying attention, as it isn't really sign marked on the highway. As such, it was not very busy when we visited. The sand was nice and the crashing waves were just big enough to make for some exciting body surfing.

“About the beach & how to get there”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 November 2012

*Note* Manini'owali beach/Kua Bay is open 9 am - 7 pm and is closed on Wednesdays!

We arrived at Kua Bay on Thanksgiving day (a Thursday in mid November) and it was pretty crowded, however, we still found a nice place to park our things and hang out. I definitely think this is one of the prettiest beaches in Kona. It's surrounded by giant lava rocks and the sand is a creamy tan and very soft - also, the water is a beautiful crystal blue. The waves were a bit big for *me*, but my husband and two 16 yr olds with us had a blast. Seems this beach is great for boogie boarding and basically "riding" the waves. I don't think the beach is wide enough for surfers and the waves break pretty close to shore. The nice thing is that you can enjoy this beach without having a four-wheel drive vehicle! I've read that some people have gone snorkeling here, that wasn't the case on this day.

There are restrooms with showers available, a few picnic tables and a parking area and no entrance fee. Oddly, the beach, or at least the road leading to the beach, is closed on Wednesdays. It's just a short walk to the sand from the parking area, but you'll be walking over a bit of lava rocks, so sandals are recommended.

Getting there: It is between the 88 and 89 mile marker (watch for the small green mile marker signs on the other side of the highway) off highway 19. As soon as you see the veterans cemetery on the right side, make a left turn toward the beach. The road is a bit windy with a few speed bumps, but it's a nice, newly paved road.

Hard to get to but the most beautiful ocean you will see. Very beautiful. swimming is great. Get there if you are on the Big Island. You can hike from the highway. We had a Jeep so we were able to get close then walk in

“Kua Bay beach visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 October 2012

When we walked onto Kua Bay beach we felt it made our trip. It was incredibly beautiful! The water and waves were a highly transparent blue. The beach was pure white. We are going back today! After visiting many other west shore beaches we liked Kua Bay the best!
