Description: Fish Hopper - Kailua-Kona * Experience the beauty of the Pacific Ocean at The Fish Hopper Seafood and Steaks, overlooking Kailua Bay on the Big Island Hawaii. Enjoy fresh Big Island and seafood flown in weekly from California. Our bar serves up signature Bucket of Fire and Volcano flaming drinks and is the perfect oceanfront location to gather with friends for Happy Hour. We are within walking distance to shops and historic sites. A landmark (formerly the Ocean View Inn) and a local favorite Kona restaurant since 1934. The Fish Hopper has been beautifully restored to expand upon its spectacular ocean views. We proudly serve seafood from sustainable sources, harvested by methods that do not harm the environment. Open daily from 730am-930pm.

We had a great meal at sunset. All of our dishes were delicious and beautifully presented. The menu selection was the largest we have seen in our week in Hawaii. It was very diverse from simple to complex so everyone in our party had several choices to select from.

Our only complaint was service...we had a newer server that did not know the menu well at all (we actually had to point to the item on the menu we wanted). He failed to check how our meals were (they were good so no problem), but he failed to refill our beverages and water, and was very slow to clear plates....it took long enough that we opted to skip dessert.

The best thing about Fish Hopper on Alii Drive in Kailua-Kona is the location. Fish Hopper is located in the former Ocean View Restaurant building, right at the bay of Kailua-Kona. Picture perfect views. Pricey food.

We ate here for lunch on our last day in Hawaii. The view is beautiful looking out over the water. I had the coconut shrimp and it was wonderful. I had originally ordered the mushrooms, but they were out. They also make a really good pina colada. I would go back there!

Spent two weeks on the Big Island, first four nights and last three nights of the trip in Kona...We ate at Fish Hopper twice--our first night there and the evening before our 11:45 pm flight (Valentine's day)...both times we had made reservations for 5:30 for a seat overlooking the water...both times we were seated right away at our requested table...outdoor seating is not really outdoor but verandah style, overlooking the bay and the street with all the people walking by...very fun.....service was attentive and friendly both times!

Our first evening in Kona we wanted to sit and look out at the water and be right in the middle of the action, relax over drinks, people watch, etc...Fish Hopper fit the bill.. fun on-the-water atmosphere, drink special was Mai Tai $5 with very generous rum float...we took our time and were not rushed...we split a coconut shrip appetizer, can't remember if it was 4 or 6 shrimp, but it was enough and tasty...I had a salad with the asian ginger dressing...this is my favourite type of dressing and I thought THIS dressing was the best I'd had....we both had the Fish Trio...they were smaller pieces of three kinds of fish (seared sesame ahi + 2 grilled) on top of three sides--mashed Hawaiian sweet potatoes (the purple ones), sauteed veggies and honestly can't remember the other one but they were nice pairings flavour wise and we thought everything was VERY good

Second time we ate at FH was Valentine's day at end of our trip...by then we had found other places we would have preferred (Jackie Rey's, Huggos) but they were already booked up...we ordered another fish trio (a little different, fish and sides)...we did not think it was nearly as good as the first meal we'd had there....I don't know if it was because it was Valentines Day and they were busier or if it was because we had had some super killer meals since our first time there (maybe the bar had been raised for us?)...but we both agreed our second meal was not as good as the first....drinks not as good either--a little watered down in my opinion...

Bottom line: fun downtown atmosphere place, good food but not fabulous compared to other places, a little high priced for the quality, but honestly a lot of places in Kona are that way...it was fun, parking was easy behind restaurant, friendly service, no major complaints...I just get the feeling that it is not consistent...for a few dollars more you can have a FANTASTIC meal at Jackie Rey's...all depends on what you're looking for...we enjoyed the atmosphere at Fish Hopper, loved the food at Jackie Reys....
