“Worked great for us”
Reviewed 6 August 2011

I was a little skeptical about sharing a bathroom with 2 other bedrooms but everyone was considerate and it worked out fine. Angelina, our hostess worked hard for all the guests comfort and somehow managed to make different breakfasts for everyone each day. The breakfast selection was great and though not " gourmet" was tasty and substantial. The location on the main road may be a problem for some but it quiets down pretty early and we had no problems sleeping.

What a great start to a new found way to travel. I loved the instant comfort of the home. Angelia was great, what a hard worker. She made everything easy for us 1st timers. We had the room on the first floor next to the kitchen. Very comfortable and quaint. The home was built in 1905 and Seward was founded in 1903. Must have been a mansion at that time. Lots of antiques all around. A plus was we were able to travel from the cruise ship dock to their block by the free shuttle (yellow school bus) and could drop our bags and then walk to town for lunch and a visit to the Sea life aquarium. The next day a 15-20 min walk to the small boat harbor to catch the sightseeing boat. That free shuttle makes a loop through town, Sea life, the small boat harbor and out to the supermarket. I wish we had time to look at some of the videos in the evening, especially the ones on Alaska and Seward history. Another plus was our laundry was done for us while we were out. Especially for the guys jeans who were out fishing in them all day. Nice catch of halibut and salmon.
As another reviewer wrote, the front entrance and stair area can give the wrong impression as to what is inside. The grounds has beautiful flowers all around. Front porch has bench for shoe removal.

Marilee, the owner, was extremely helpful even before I arrived. After I inquired about reservations via email, she replied with lots of information about things to see and do in and around Seward. She also made reservations for me on a sightseeing boat, passing along her commission which doubled my discount from 10 to 20 percent. I didn't get a chance to meet her - she must have been away when I stayed at the B&B - but Angelia, the young woman who was the hostess in Marilee's absence, was just as helpful. For example, one morning I had to leave before breakfast for an early morning sightseeing cruise. Angelia offered to pack a breakfast for me; in fact, if I wanted something she didn't have on hand, she offered to go to the grocery and buy it for me. The sack breakfast was beyond my expectations - a large dish of fresh fruit, several muffins (more than I should have eaten) and a large dish of yogurt. The second morning, I had breakfast in the dining room, which was cooked to order from a large number of choices. The kitchen and dining room were also open 24 hrs/day if guests wanted a snack. The living room had a computer that guests can use, in addition to a large selection of Alaska books and videos that guests could watch on their in-room TVs (if you're counting on watching anything else on TV, you'll be out of luck, since there were only 1 or 2 stations available, but I didn't come to Alaska to watch TV). The room itself was nice size with the cozy feel of an older house (one of the things I like about B&Bs), the bed was comfortable and the shared bathroom was rather large and clean. Bath robes were also provided in the room for guests. I'll admit that I was a little put off by the front entrance (the concrete on the stairs needed some repair), but any hesitations disappeared once I stepped inside. The Ballaine House reservation policy is extremely liberal - no deposit required but let them know if you cancel - which tells me Marilee trusts her guests and guests can trust that they've made a good choice if they decide to stay here.

Marilee, the woman who owns and runs the B&B was warm and welcoming. She was helpful with information with the tours and the activities in Seward. She made us feel completely at home. The place was comfortable and felt like a home. We highly recommend this B&B. Thanks Marilee for making our stay a memorable one! William & Jenny

Ballaine House Lodging is simply the best B&B we have ever stayed in, bar none. That is because the hostess, Marilee, went so unbelievably far out of her way to make the visit to her B&B and her town the best experience possible.

Our visit started with Marilee picking us up at the train station. (There is now a free shuttle bus provided by the town during the summer, but we were not aware of that and it was raining, so Marilee just came down herself and picked us up.) We were very interested in doing a dog sled ride at “Mitch Seavey’s Iditaride,” and she called and booked the event for us, making sure that we were given the 10% discount she was entitled to for referring clients to them. The company offers free pick up service in town.
Then we decided that the following day we would like to visit and take a hike at the Exit Glacier, located about 11 miles out of town. Marilee made sure we had transportation to the glacier. We did this the next day, and upon returning to town it was time to have lunch, and she asked where we would like to go and what type of food we wanted. She then recommended a waterfront restaurant that met our needs perfectly.

Marilee wanted to know what we intended to do on the following day, which was the day of departure for our cruise ship. We responded that we would not be able to do anything, because boarding for our ship began at about 11 a.m., even though the ship was not scheduled to leave until evening. Marilee explained the procedure for boarding cruise ships. She said we could simply drop off our luggage about 11:00 or 11:30, register for the ship, get our boarding passes, and then we had the afternoon free, as all we had to do then was return later and go straight to security and board the ship before departure. With this knowledge, we decided to use the next day to take a three-hour wildlife cruise in Resurrection Bay after we had registered for the ship. Marilee booked the cruise for us and got us a 20% discount on that trip. The wildlife cruise was every bit as good as Marilee said it would be; Resurrection Bay was truly beautiful, and we saw various kinds of birds, two different kinds of seals, and some sea otters. (Warning: We were fortunate to have good weather, and this helped a great deal; the trip might not have been as inviting if the weather was foggy.) We followed the planned cruise ship boarding procedure, and it worked like clockwork! We quickly boarded through the security entrance with no waiting line. What a breeze!

Oh yes….the daily breakfast. Marilee asked us each night what we wanted for breakfast: e.g., eggs, pancakes (regular or blueberry?), fruit, bacon, coffee (or tea or hot chocolate?), and what time we would like to eat. Great breakfasts! Did we mention that Marilee also offered to do laundry for use (which we declined as we did not have enough dirty clothes at that point to justify a load)?

As you can see, it would be difficult to imagine a more accommodating hostess. She made our visit to Seward a thoroughly enjoyable experience, and we could not recommend Ballaine House Lodging more highly!

Our stay at the Ballaine House in Seward was one of the best experiences during our trip around Alaska. The woman that owns the B&B is so very nice and helpful, and she really helped with where to go, what to see and how to do it. She's just one of those people who can't help helping others :-) She was the reason we stayed in Seward longer than planned, because she could tell us what we shouldn't miss. It was great!
Apart from her lovely personality, her B&B is nice and clean with good beds!
