“Not a 4 star. Overpriced for what you get.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 May 2012

Stayed at the hotel Ranga for two nights. Wasn't impressed! Don't understand the other ratings at all. We had a standard room, more like basic. The bathroom, well. A corner bath. With a shower on the wall but no shower curtain, so we had to sit in the bath to have a shower or you soaked the bathroom. The sink cupboard to the side was all warped, obviously from other quests not worrying about the lack of curtain. The shared hot tubs, shared is fine but in full view of the restaurant is not fine. There should be a screen around them. The beds weren't great either, far two soft. A dirty mug was left in our room for two days. And after a long day trekking/enjoying the wonderful scenery the room was the last place we wanted to relax in, there was only one chair anyway, which had seen better days.

This was the fourth hotel we stayed at on our trip to Iceland, this was by fair the worst. It took the shine of our week, a real shame as its a wonderful country. If you have to stay here eat in Hella the prices at Ranga are crazy!

I wouldn't go back to the Ranga!

Lovely strange place out of a western movie, wooden architectur fitting the outbacks of Canada. Polar bear greeting comes as a surprise. Friendly reception ladies but rooms are more on the average side and come quite expensive for their view and very small space. Bathrooms however are big and comfy. The best thing about this place is the restaurant, their food is the biggest surprise in this part of Outer Thule. We had the best lamb ever! Strange to have a view from the restaurant overr a chubby man sitting in a hotpot, but, well, aren't the Iclenaders supposed to te a bit strange? If it would not be for the Chubby, the view is great, you have the bad Guy from 2010 right in front of your nose, Vulcanic delights, and well, Katla can be seen and she is supposed to be the next bad guy:-).
Wonderfull owner, who took us right away from our desert to let us have a look into the strange visitors from outer space, mid april and the northern lihjt was all there!
Go for it and if it is for the food only!
Wonderfull breakfast buffet added to the fun!

Room Tip: well, go for one of the suites if you like fancy, the normal rooms are less then average. And make s...

The work annual party this time was held at the hotel Ranga. I have to admit it's a rather expensive hotel but it's worth spending one night there just for the sake of experience. The hotel is located in the south of Iceland, which is on the way to some major attractions, such as Skógafoss waterfall and Glacier lagoon. The standard rooms are rather small but stylish and very cozy. Every room has a huge bath tub, deluxe rooms are all equipped with jacuzzi. The restaurant is just top notch. The dinner we had there was simply delicious and the breakfast had both healthy and regular choices. But the main thing was, of course, the outside hot tubs, where you can relax and enjoy the beautiful unbroken Icelandic nature view (especially great for the Northern Lights watching during the winter time).

Room Tip: Try to get a room net to the hot tub

Wow. What can I say? Fantastic country, wonderful scenery and the most hospitable of staff. Absolutely loved it. We had an upgrade for my husband's birthday where we found a spa bath in the bedroom. The bed was absolutely divine. Really didn't want to get out of bed! The whole place was spotless. The pool room, little seating areas around the hotel and upper bar/dining area were quiet retreats from an already peaceful setting. You couldn't hear the cars on local highway nor the bar (private party; which we were invited to!!). Now the food....
Easily 'a la carte' standard with a view to a pre/ michelin star standard. In order to get a 5* rating they informed me they needed a helicopter pad. GET IT!!! The extensive wine list catered for all pockets however, we found the 2004 Chateau Neuf de Pape a better tasting wine than the 2004 French Pinot Noir which was nearly 3-fold pricier (apologies for true wine enthusiasts!) Excellent service. Cannot be faulted :) In addition, I found that the lower dining room overlooked a salmon river which produced our dinner (you can't get fresher than that!) with a delicious selection of foods for breakfast.
Overall, we are looking forward to returning to Iceland for the sole purpose of staying at the Hotel Ranga and catching the lights. Love this place. I really do. Not only would I like to meet some of the staff again, but I sincerely wish them the best of luck. x

Room Tip: All good. However, the themed rooms on the upper floor are stunningly beautiful.

Hotel Ranga is a very cosy hotel, with lovely facilities and an excellent restaurant. We had the standard room and it was great - quite enough room and a lovely big bathroom with a jacuzzi bath.
The restaurant is expensive, but not prohibitively. Wine is expensive wherever you go, so if you're a T-total then your meal will be significantly less. The puffin is delicious, definitely try it if you're not a veggie!

The location is perfect for access to hiking, and all the excursions. And since it's in the middle of nowhere, you won't hear a thing at night so you'll sleep VERY well.

The only thing that could have improved our stay would have been to see the Northern Lights! But the hotel have the courtesy to wake you up if they're showing, which is great.

Room Tip: Standard rooms are excellent - there are only about 50 rooms, all with similar surroundings, so you...

the complimentary reviews are spot on and accurate. we stayed 2 nights just after easter. the views, atmosphere, service, hot tubs, quality of food are all excellent. we were awoken and saw the northern lights one of the 2 nights, but it was very brief and almost certainly a mini showing and not quite the full spectacle. best to plan lots of other things and then if you also see the lights then its a magical bonus.
distances are great in iceland. this is a superb overnight stay after leaving reykjavik and driving round the 3 golden circle sites. the next day we went crampon walking and ice climbing on the nearby myrdalsjokyl glacier and walking around 2 lovely waterfalls, selgalandsfoss and skogafoss. the latter is under rated and at the top there is a lovely walk of whatever length you wish. the next day we headed back to reykjavic for whale watching, but if we had had more time we would have pressed on to the the glacier iceberg lagoon which is quite some distance. away. All in all a really great place and lovely hotel

We have just returned from a self-drive tour of Southern Iceland, Hotel Ranga was the last stop along the way and was the perfect end. The hotel is beautiful, and very authentic with is wooden decor. Our room was spacious and had a little balcony that would have been perfect for viewing the northern lights, but unfortunately they didn't make an appearance. They were very clean, with a TV and DVD player with a large selection of films- the bathroom was the highlight for me with a huge jacuzzi bath- perfect after a day glacier hiking!

The restaurant was excellent, the staff were very attentive and describe each course for you and they present it. All the dishes were beautifully prepared and very artistic. The creme brulee with 'ice, snow and lava rocks' was a definite highlight for me.

Breakfast was excellent as well, with definitely the largest selection out of the 5 hotels we stayed at.

There's a really nice lounge area with a pool table as well if you don't want to be in your room all night.

Overall it was quite pricey, as most places in Iceland are- but I absolutely loved this hotel and definite was to visit it again!

location is good, very central and off the main shopping street, although there was no parking and it was noisy with people clubbing until the early hours.

The decor is very modern, with black leather beds, 'modern lighting' and a very modern bathroom. However, the bathroom had a large frosted window into the bedroom- and despite being frosted you could still see everything- I'm not a prude but I do like a bit of privacy! The door was also very large and glass and had complete clear sections in... which were off-putting.

Again the 'double' room was 2 singles pushed together with 2 single duvets and it was absolutely baking at night, despite the window being open.

There was no restaurant as advertised, but breakfast was good- quite a lot of choice.

We went to the restaurant next door 'Sushi Samba' and would definitely recommend it- it was absolutely fantastic!

Overall, a nice hotel but shouldn't really be classified as a 4 star as lots of improvements could be made.
