Owner description: The LAVA centre features an interactive exhibition exploring the art and science of geology and the volcanic systems in Iceland. Information from the past century’s eruptions demonstrate just how strong a presence volcanoes have in contemporary Iceland. Feel the forces of nature as you experience an earthquake and see the Fiery Heart of Iceland, a 12m high structure simulating the Mantle plume and the magma flow underneath Iceland. In an educational learning centre you can explore the wonders of volcanoes and earthquakes through interactive computers and there’s also a cinema auditorium where visitors can see the magnificence of volcanic eruptions in HD 4K.

Iceland is full of geographical wonder, however if you want it explained in an interactive and fun way then this is the museum to visit. The way it is designed alllows to feel, hear and understand what Icelanders live with, while understanding the geographical issues. The museum allows you to touch and interactive with the displays in a fun and creative way, which will amuse and educate children and adults. The museum contains a shop and restaurant and has a great video to watch about a 100 years of eruptions and earthquakes.

Geography has never been my strong point but this museum really made thins easy to understand without needing a relevant degree and also without being too simple which was great as that's a difficult balance to achieve. The entrance price was included in our tour package but I don't imagine it will be cheap as with anything in Iceland prices are high. Quality here is good though and interaction throughout. Staff were most helpful and polite.

There is also a care area and gift shop. Clean and free toilets also.

Visited this place as a family of four, with two young kids (1 and 4 years). The exhibition is very interesting and well made - I really enjoyed it. It is probably best suited for kids 5+ years, but it did inspire our four year old. Recommended! Great restaurant too

We came here while on a private south tour. The price of admission was rather high but what isn't in Iceland. We paid for the movie and museum and went first to the movie. It was a very well done movie but we felt like it wasn't worth the extra money. The movie was only 12 minutes. They should have just included it in the price of admission. The museum was very nice. Great interactive exhibits that gave a thorough explanation of the volcanoes around Iceland. It was a very high end production and the experience was very nice. We did feel like the museum was a little too short. If you have some time when you are visiting the south coast, this is worth stopping in.

Iceland is know at the land of "fire and Ice" and the Lava Center explains the raw power that the volcanoes exert on this island. Maps show locations of active volcanoes and simulators allow you to feel the power of earthquakes.
One does not have to be a geology maven to appreciate the knowledge to be gained at the Lava Center.
