Beautiful house that was centrally located near all the sights in Southwest Iceland. We used it as a base to explore the attractions near the Golden Circle and the southwestern coast down to Vik i Myrdal. The house is about a 55 minutes drive to Thingvellir National Park; 20 minutes to Geysir; 30 minutes to Gullfoss; 15 minutes to the Secret Lagoon; 20 minutes to Kerid Crater, and about 2 hours to Vik. The house was large with a separate living space upstairs and was stocked with everything that we needed during our stay. We enjoyed soaking in the hot tub at night after a day of exploring the sights, but just wanted to note that the hot tub does not have any jets and so you have to drain and fill it each time you want to use it. We stayed for five nights after New Years 2019 and were able to see the Northern Lights on our last night there. The area around the house is not really that dark since the large greenhouses in Reykholt cast an orange glow over the North-Northeast sky, but the clouds cleared and the aurora show came out for us in the North-Northwestern sky after the snowstorm passed. The owner was very helpful with check-in information and directions prior to our visit and with providing us with recommended things to see during our stay. There is a small market nearby for picking up some basic supplies; Restaurant Mika is close and has very good food; and the Fridheimer tomato farm is also in Reykholt and is a nice place to visit and have a soup and bread lunch. Would highly recommend to anyone wanting to stay and visit the Golden Circle area.
I was fortunate to find this house when I picked it from the TripAdvisor website.
The owner, Johannes, has been frequently in touch from the outset and was very helpful in giving me directions as to how to get to the property & enter, and giving travel, weather, safety & sightseeing information. He made me feel as if I was staying at a friend's house.
The house is ideally situated, just outside the village of Reykholt, to cover the Golden Circle and other local attractions in this wonderful country. The town of Selfoss for all your needs is an easy drive away.
The house in very good condition is clean, warm & fully equipped for a self catering stay - all you have to do is to get the provisions in. It was comfortable & spacious enough to accommodate me, my niece, her husband & their 3yr old daughter, especially for whom it was safe. It stands in a well kept plot with trees, a lawn with a pond & an ornamental troll's house. The hot tub is very relaxing (& almost all previous guests had enjoyed it too, judging by their comments in the Visitors' Book). It has a large main tv, other tvs, videos & player, radios & a small 'library' of books.
Our bonus was to see the Northern Lights on Monday & Wednesday nights!
All in all, it was a very pleasant stay - thank you.
It is clear that Johannes maintains this superb, spacious home as a private residence when not available for rentals. Everything is provided for an upscale, comfortable stay. Beautifully landscaped, with decks all around to enjoy the views, it is well furnished, even to the hot tub and large collection of DVD's available. It's central location provides easy access to the major Golden Circle attractions in one direction, as well as Selfoss, the major town about 22 km (14 miles) in the other direction to the south. Selfoss has numerous restaurants, with Yellow and Kaffi Krus great choices for breakfast, and Surf and Turf excellent for dinner. Even closer to the cabin, Miniborgir serves a fine buffet breakfast and lunch as well as dinner. An absolute gem of a home, ideal for a 2 night stay as a base to explore the Golden Circle on one day, and then jump off to all the attractions to the south and east the next.
Johannes’ home is a lovely get away that offers every imaginable way to relax from the big screen TVs to the hot tub to the lovely reading porch to have your morning coffee. Thie location is also perfect to drive to all of the sights around the Golden Circle.
Not only a beautiful house but also the perfect hosts! House was clean, fully equipped, a quiet location and a good place to relax after a busy day. Upon arriving, the bread, cheese and butter were an unexpected surprise. Thanks again.
I would recommend it to all.
Fantastic week in Iceland staying at this fabulous house.
The house is set about 1/2 a mile from the Golden Circle road in a quiet location but with great views from the balcony. The only noises are from the Snipe and Redwing.
The house is well equipped and provided a great base for our family of four.
The hot tub was ideal to relax in after long sightseeing days which included Geysir, Gulfoss, Pfingfellir, a volcanic crater and Secret Lagoon all within 45 minutes and longer trips to Reykjavík for whale watching, Westman Islands for rib safari, Reynisfjara beach (black sand, basalt and puffins) and visits to volcanoes, glaciers and waterfalls en route.
Local bakery in Fludir was excellent as was Mika restaurant (1-2 miles away).
Johannes was quick to respond to messages and queries and is a a great owner who is lucky enough to own such a fabulous property. Thank you.
