My husband, daughter and son in law stayed at the Hotel La Playa for 5 nights. We had 2 double rooms which were spotlessly clean and comfortable. Aircon was appreciated during the hot steamy nights. The hotel is located a nice walk away from the town centre and marina. There is a lovely pool and garden dining area. Breakfasts were buffet style and quite sufficient. The restaurant served delicious Sardinian home cooking. In all, a good stay.

Our family of four stayed five days at this really nice hotel! Nice ocean view and the cleaning was great! The A/C worked well and the breakfast was OK. Nice coffee from a real espresso machine and you can have eggs cooked at your choice (scrambled, fried etc). We also got a breakfast package when leaving very early for our flight home. Super nice! On the negative side the walls seems to be thin as paper! Incredibly responsive! Also we would have liked the pool to be a little cooler. It was probably 30 degrees and it didnt cool you down! However, the pool was very well kept!

I had a great stay at the La Playa. Rooms are very clean, staff are friendly and the food is fantastic. Prices are reasonable too. The hotel has fabulous views and is only a short walk from the harbour and the center of town. In case you are a diver, there is a really good dive operation adjacent to the hotel.

Hotel La Playa is above Calagonone away from the hustle and bustle. The hotel is very relaxing with pool and inhouse restaurant and dive shop and only minutes walk away from the beach. I would recommend to go on a dive or snorkeling tour with the inhouse dive shop to see the scenic underwater topography

In summary: A nice small hotel with a spacious family room with basic cooking facilities & fridge - was exactly what we needed.

We stayed in August and on arrival, I was a bit concerned there would be nowhere to park as the approach road was jam packed - but it was not a problem on any day. We had the family room at the top of the hotel and cooked for ourselves for all except breakfast.

What you might like:

- The room is big - double bed plus 2 single beds, and still plenty of space.
- Very large balcony with nice sea view in front and hills to the right.
- The hotel was comfortably able to cope with breakfast for coeliac guests (i.e. non-gluten) - with a supply of bread, cakes and biscuits as well as understanding the issues surrounding it.
- Well positioned within the town - sea was 10 mins walk and shops about the same.
- Small-ish but very quiet pool... low number of guests meant it was empty most of the time, so the kids loved it.
- Hotel staff were helpful and friendly.
- Our balcony had no one left, right or above, so was quite private.
- Aircon was fine.

What might be a problem:

- Not much storage space.
- Noisy folding bathroom door... not great at 3am.
- Top of the hotel so stairs could be a problem for some.
- Hotel staff don't speak English (other than rudimentary) so mime-artist skills might be useful.
- On the roof there was an extractor fan that would start up when they were cooking downstairs, and sometimes this was noisy and fishy if we were out on the balcony.
- Cala Gonone is built on a hillside, so there is an uphill walk back from the sea.
- The beaches here are largely gravelly rather than fine sand.
- No in-room safe.
- Fridge has a colder section, but there is no freezer as such.
- The dining table in the room is under a sloping roof so heads were connected on a few occasions. It would be nice if they provided a separate table out on the balcony.

This was a good location to explore the coast and the gorgeous beaches via boat, though the large collection of boat-hire companies remarkably all charge about the same extortionate amount. Not that they would operate a cartel or anything I am sure.

The water is nice and has fish to see if you like snorkelling, though watch for the urchins as there were alot.

The room was clean and the maid came daily (I think) - in fact, talking from experience, if you stay here be careful to check if the balcony sliding door is open or shut before you walk through it...

Room Tip: The family room at the top is big with a great sea-view balcony.
