“Charming Hospitality”
Reviewed 21 March 2012

They don't make such "Inns" anymore, and so for a taste of Southern hospitality, you should try Linden Row when in Richmond. I checked in for a business overnight and was immeidately impressed with the friendliness of the staff, the charm of the lobby layout, and the feeling that i had entered another time zone. The rooms werre situated off a porch overlooking a courtyard. There were sitting parlors throughout. Rooms had colonial decor...and yet the rooms had wi-fi, cable and all amenities. Breakfast was ample and tasty and included. Parking was ample on the street or they had valet service. A shuttle was ready to take you downtown. The room was clean, updated and generously proportioned. Location was great. But the best part was the incredible value--this Inn is half the price of the chain hotels and motels where things are 'cookie cutter'--so why pay more and get less?

Room Tip: Rooms 234 and 235 are set off from the main hallways in a closed door enclave at the end of the hall...

We rode the train into Richmond for college visit at VCU. The hotel picked us up at the station and stowed our bags. The desk clerk gave us several suggestions for restaurants within walking distance. A pub two blocks away was great! The hotel gave us a ride to and from VCU. We checked in and were very pleased with the room. It was spacious and welcoming. The courtyard was a nice quiet place to relax and check email. For dinner we took another recommendation and went to Beauregard's Thai Room. Again just two blocks away and excellent food. Slept great and had a very nice breakfast with other guests. We had to check out but the hotel was kind enough to stow our bags and provide transportation to Cary town for shopping and to the train station when we had to leave. We hope to return soon. We enjoyed the city and the Lindon Row Inn!

No, this place is not grand. If you love old homes and literary connections with comfort and hospitality thrown in, this IS the place for you. I just returned from two restorative nights at this welcoming place - and I was on business!
The Inn is an old home, or series of homes on one of Richmond's grand streets. The outside gives little hint to what is inside - comfortable and reasonably priced rooms situated around a courtyard where, as legend has it, Edgar Allan Poe courted the love of his life! Who could ask for more. Not only that but also the Inn is on the National Register of Historic Places!
This is not a Marriott. This is not a Hilton Garden Inn. This gem aspires to be different, and it is. The front desk staff is unfailingly helpful, the shuttle driver is on time and a great source of info about Richmond, the maintenance staff greets you with a cheery, "Good morning!"
My room, a garden room, was small but not too much so. The bed was more than comfortable, the bathroom was up to date with granite and the works, the free wi-fi was easily accessed, the breakfast was more than ample and served in a spacious setting with the option to take your food to the courtyard. What more is needed?
My room was $50 less per night than the rate quoted by the Marriott for the group I was in Richmond with. Who would believe an oasis like this is still available in today's cookie-cutter world?

Room Tip: Seems to me that any are good. I chose the least expensive garden room, and it had everything I need...

We enjoyed our stay at the Linden Row Inn and thought it had a great deal of character. I believe the place was originally built in the mid 1800s as row houses and then around 1990 it was converted into a historical hotel. The rooms are smaller than regular hotels, but they are very comfortable and adequate for our stay. They have a shuttle to take you around Richmond as well and that came in very handy for us. The staff was very friendly and helpful as well. I thought it was a nice change from your normal chain brand hotels to stay in and the price was much, much lower as well. The breakfast is lacking, but good for something to grab on the go...they did have a waffle station though. If you want a neat place to stay with a great deal of character, I would recommend this to you.

Thanks for taking the time to comment on our rich history. The seven row homes which function as the Linden Row Inn were built in the 1840's, and have hosted well known historic figures such as Jefferson Davis (President of the Confederacy), Hetty Cary (Confederate spy and creator of the Confederate flag), Joseph Anderson (the owner of Tredegar Iron Company), and Nancy Astor (the first female member of British Parliament). By 1950, Mary Wingfield Scott (a noted architectural historian) restored the buildings after saving them from demolition. This paved the way for the seven row homes to be converted to an inn in 1988.

The next time you visit us, be sure to check out "Miss Pegram's Parlour" which has been called "the meeting place of the Confederacy." And, if you are looking for a larger room, we would definitely suggest reserving a Main House room or a Parlour Suite. We look forward to hosting you again soon!

This was a last minuet booking for a hotel in Richmond. Could not have been happier. The rate was great and the room was really big, clean, and comfortable. Had a good nights sleep and was refreshed in the morning.

The room was so big that it did feel a bit sparse in the furnishings. The television was a bit far from the bed and there was a lot of empty space in the room. Other than that it was a great stay.

We didn't eat or have any drinks in the bar but it did look pretty nice.

Thank you for taking the time to write about your refreshing stay at the Linden Row Inn. One benefit of our history is that our Main House rooms are quite spacious, especially for the price. For a cozier option, next time you might want to try a Garden Room. We look forward to seeing you again!

This is an old and historic building (or row of buildings!) converted into a modest hotel. The location is good, on a fairly quiet intersection of side streets within walking distance of many of the interesting areas of Richmond.

I arrived late at night, and was checked in by the night clerk. Check in was a bit slow, but the reservation was in order. Check out, a couple of days' later, was more frustrating, as the same night clerk had turned off the computer, so, tight on timing to leave for an early flight, I had to listen to the Microsoft boot-up chime grinding away so he could print out the paperwork... Still, it all worked eventually and he was pleasant enough.

The reception area is cluttered and cramped, but my room was a good size (the opposite of most modern hotels' grandiose receptions and tiny rooms). The furniture was old, not quite antique, but provided good storage space and a large desk. The bed was perfectly comfortable and the linen good quality. Internet worked well and was free. The bathroom was a good size, and well appointed, with a comfortable long bath. The plug didn't work well so the bathwater emptied while I was reading in the bath, and the toilet is right next to full-length window on to the street (entertaining, I hope more so for me than passers-by, and the kind of thing that happens when you add modern facilities to an old building!). Although this was a standard room, the size of the bedroom (uncluttered with too much furniture), the bathroom, and the separate entrance hallway, made it feel more like a suite.

There's one lift, which feels more like a service lift than a guest lift, and it took a few passes to work out the route to the stairs (staying on the third floor it seemed a bit lazy to take the lift every time). The corridor linking the rooms is outdoors, which is a nice touch (and determined by the age and structure of the building). I liked opening my door to fresh air in the morning.

Breakfast was basic but perfectly adequate, in a separate and spacious dining room, more reminiscent of a b'n'b dining room than a hotel restaurant, by reception. Suggestions for dinner were well handled, by a desk clerk who knew the restaurants rather than just googling them.

This place grew on me. It's not a classic grande-dame old hotel, but it's more than a rambling old b'n'b. It certainly has character, is comfortable, and is appropriately priced. It's nowhere near as glitzy as the website makes out, and it could use some more investment (I'd revamp the rather off-putting reception area completely, scrub up the breakfast room, and do a minor redecorate of the guest rooms). But I liked it and I'll probably stay here again next time I'm in town.

Thank you for taking the time to write a thorough review of the Linden Row Inn. Because our property was transformed from a series of row homes into an inn, our property does have a unique layout and many of our rooms are larger than rooms you would find at newer hotels. That said, our spa-style granite bathrooms add a touch of modern luxury to the property's Civil War-era charm.

We appreciate your constructive, detailed feedback and look forward to hosting you again in the future!
