I am working on a project in Richmond that required me to find extended lodging, for 8 weeks. Candlewood was not my 1st choice. I wanted to keep my hotel expenses under $300/wk. Candlewood was about $375. The place I found for $300 was terrible in every way. After one week, I moved to Candlewood.

The price is reasonable, but the accommodations are very nice. Very clean rooms. Updated full kitchen which includes plates, flatware, glasses, toaster, dishwasher, two burner stove, cook ware, microwave and a full size refrigerator with ice maker. Also, a big updated desk/dresser/dining area. The bed is firm, with lots of comfy pillows.

A once per week room cleaning is included, but once per day is optional for an extra fee. I chose once per week, but enjoy using their free towel exchange. Also included is a pretty robust cable channel line up, a good wifi connection, and a very nice flat screen tv.

The bathroom is also updated, and very clean. Which is very important to me. And, there is not only laundry facilities on site, it is free (except soap). The workout facility is very nice with new equipment, including free weights.

Then there is also a well stocked mini store, with frozen foods, fruit, cereal, milk/juice/soda/water, ice cream and laundry itens. All can be charged to your room, or paid for at the front desk. And, complimentary fresh coffee, made fresh per cup, all day and night. As good of a cup of coffee as Starbucks, and saves me $5 a day. There is a gas grill outside and a picnic table, a nice touch.

Fastfood and gas are nearby, and a decent restaurant/bar next door called Victory Bar and Grill. However, you will have to drive to Chester or Midlothian to find supermarkets.

The hotel is conveniently right off I 95, about ten minutes from downtown Richmond, and 25 minutes from Petersburg. I am working in both cities, and appreciate its proximity to I 95. Frankly, its in the industrial part of town, next to the big Phillip Morris plant. Which means it is pretty quiet, and safe, at night.

The staff are very nice and helpful. It is pet friendly, for an additional fee, but not much more (comparable to other hotels). It's a pretty quiet place in general. The only thing keeping me from 5 stars is that the downtown Hilton is a five star hotel. But, also $200+/night. As far as long term residence hotels, its five stars.

We initially were checked into the Red Roof Inn down the street and had a bad experience. I called Candlewood at around 11pm and they said they could absolutely have us. We checked into a very nice room, very clean and comfortable. Would absolutely stay at a Candlewood again. Only downside was no breakfast in the AM. But coffee in the lobby was fantastic!

Room Tip: Bring breakfast food
