Barrel House is a classy tapas bar in a lovely and fun spot right along the canal walk in the Shockoe Slips area. We enjoyed the outside seating on a splendid summer evening ... not to mention some wonderful "introductions" and tapas including the fried artichokes, the seafood platter, the snapper, the mushroom and croquets (which I didn't taste since I don't do red meat).
Everything was perfect... inviting presentation, surprising and delightful taste combinations, generous portions considering the very concept of tapas. All a pretty good value. Plus our server Skylar was sweet, prompt and helpful.
UNTIL ... we got to the coffee. Folks... I know it's a bar, but not all of us drink (as much as I wanted a mojito). But we do like to top off a nice dinner with a java. Two concepts for you here: Starbucks. And half-and-half. Not whatever horrific brew you are serving. And not "international delight" fake creamers. Almost spoiled the whole evening.
With the entire civilized world now populated with coffee bars, expectations are a bit higher. At the very least, get a Keurig.
This is not hard. If you would fix the coffee, this review would be a 5 out of 5.
