Perfect budget hotel

Review of Sunflower Hotel
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jul 10, 2019via mobile
I was worried about visiting this hotel because of some of the views but I had no need to be.

I was on holiday for a friends wedding and about 20 guests stayed in this hotel and no one had complaints.

The hotel was clean, comfortable and all the staff were very helpful.

The roof top pool is fab, only downside is that there is not much shade and also the bar shuts at 5pm (this needs to be made clear at the poolside with a sign).

The breakfast is great for the price. Cooked and cereals, fruit and yogurt.

The air conditioning isn’t great in the rooms but I think this is normal throughout Malta.

The hotel is about 6-10 mins from main front.

If you are visiting Malta download the app Bolt for taxis!

Good:
- The staff is extremely friendly and ready to help.
- Hotel is a walking distance from Bugibba Square and many busstops, so everything is easily accessible. Lots of restaurants in the area.
- Breakfast was simple but okay. As I’m vegan, there was barely any choice for me, so I bought my own stuff. For non-vegans it’s fine.
- The pool was very nice! They sell very cheap smoothies (recommend!).

Bad:
- The rooms are extremely basic. We only had ONE outlet to plug our phones in, which was a huge struggle! The beds are also pretty hard and the shower fell apart one time.
- The neighborhood did not feel very safe for two young women. We were repeatedly followed, catcalled and intimidated by men, so I would not go there again.

The hotel itself is alright. The A/C is way too loud, the room cleanliness could be improved. Bathroom for sure needs an upgrade since there are plenty of marks in a tub, the wooden pieces kept falling down from the walls. Shower curtain is very unhygienic, toilet needs deep cleaning. Could go on and on. The corridors are horrible, on my way to the room I can clearly see damaged wall which was taped with brown tape from top to bottom and the carpet was awfully stained. For a 3 star hotel I guess it's ok? The food was literally 2 stars out of 5. And by the way, room has only 1 socket!!!!! And it's not even near the bed. Wouldn't come back there.

Anyone wanting more than clean sheets/ towels and hot water please avoid this hotel, we have had lots of holidays abroad and this accommodation is by far the worst we have ever stayed in. After asking the rep to move hotels and having no luck due to everywhere being full we had 2 gruelling weeks here.
Everywhere is very old and need of repair, beds rickety, floors sticky, bath and toilet ground in dirt, one 3 pin socket, no hot drinks making facilities in the room, all looks drab and scruffy, air con switched off at regular intervals, our hair drier didn’t work and the sink wouldn’t drain, no where pleasant to sit and relax with a drink.
As for the food it’s awful and very very limited choices, breakfast one day fried egg and bacon next scrambled eggs and sausage which alternated each day like this, if you got there after 7.30am there were no cups left and people were getting hot drinks in cereal bowls, no glasses left for juice. Evening meal wasn’t any better, the soup like dish water, I choice of veg and potato each night, and dessert wasn’t much better the cakes were hard and tasteless but at least the ice cream was edible.
Having paid for half board it ended up costing us more as had to eat out every night.
Staff very unfriendly apart from a couple of restaurant staff.
Bed and breakfast and for 2 nights tops would be too much. Sleep and shower and get out of there all day. Better still avoid at all costs
