I can almost recommend travel without reservations to anyone. We found Woodstock, VT and The Charleston House just before dark on a chilly October evening. With no reservations we saw the vacancy sign at the The Charleston House and stopped. Dixie and Willa were kind enough to take us in as they had three rooms left on that Sunday night (we were lucky that Willa suggested to Dixie that we have the upper room as the lower one needed a radiator tune up). Very nice room at a very nice price and a super excellent gourmet breakfast. (I drank too much of their good coffee and so didn't sleep as well as I might have.) So nice we stayed three nights and would have stayed longer if we hadn't had to head back to Boston. Because the room we had first was reserved we moved to another room after the 2nd night; both very nice rooms. Loved walking around town, great shops, good restaurants, and the best bookstore in the world!!
