“Fabulous, quirky and charming”
Reviewed May 13, 2016 for a stay in February 2016

We stayed here in February and enjoyed a lovely warm welcome. It's quite unlike anywhere we've ever stayed before. The house is built into the side of a hill and the rooms are all underground. It's very cosy, warm, well-equipped & clean.

Malutka is a great host. She was friendly & helpful when we asked but left us lots of space.

Her creativity shows throughout the property, which is unique and fascinating in its decor and the quirky features. There are little grottos within some of the rooms and delightful surprises in the nooks & crannies.

The view from the front (and from the roof top garden) is lovely. We'd never stayed in Andalusia before and enjoyed exploring the area. Baza itself is a quiet little town. There's wonderful walking in the surrounding national parks. Guadix and Granada are both an easy drive away.

A magical find. A wonderful, unusual venue full of fabulous art and treasures collected from around the globe. The caves are beautifully decorated and new hidden treasures reveal themselves at every glance. The upper terrace is great for a quiet afternoon of sun bathing (weather permitting) whilst the downstairs terrace comes alive at night with the twinkling of fairy lights. The caves have everything you need for your stay and supplies can be found in the local Lidl and array of shops.
A car is an advantage with many sights to see within an hour's drive. Whilst within the caves there are no stairs, Baza is a town with steep hills so be prepared when exploring by foot.
Thoroughly enjoyed my relaxing stay in this magical escape.

I adored the cave house, it was truly like staying in a wonderful art installation. It made me feel like a child full of wonder runnig around exploring and looking at everything.

“A magically unique cave house...”

This is an amazing place to stay.Malutka's cave house is a work of art and the attention to detail in every room is stunning. It was lovely to come home to a cool bath on the roof terrace after long walks in the surrounding hills. The beds are really comfortable(with electric blankets which we didn't need)... and so quiet ! On the practical side, the house is thoughtfully equipped with everything you could possibly need.We stayed for a week and wished it had been longer.
Thank you Malutka for a very memorable stay :-)...we will be back!

“Quirky? - Yes. Amazing? Yes.”

Having decided to take my wife to a cave house for her birthday, I did a lot of research on line, and this was the clear front runner, so I booked it. We flew into Murcia, and hired a car to drive across to Baza. The first thing to say is that I was given clear written directions to the house, and a link to an on line video of the last ten or so minutes of the drive. Consequently, despite a auxiliary power socket failure and so a sat-nav that died, we had no problem getting to the house. Our welcome, despite us being early, was faultless, we were given a guided tour and instruction on the use of various electrical items, and were made to feel at home.
The cave house is just amazing! Rooms off rooms, and nik-naks everywhere. We both loved it. It was quite warm enough, the bed we used was comfortable, there were a couple of heaters if needed, and everything one could possibly want in a self catering accommodation.
The view from the roof terrace is tremendous (but only accessible by climbing a ladder).
There are lots of things to do and see within reasonable driving distance,
We really loved it and hope to return again soon, and have already recommended it to a friend.

Management Response

What lovely, lovely people and so very respectful of the property and its content. We always endeavour to do our best for all our guests but how much more rewarding it is when the guests are truly delighted with what they find and then express their appreciation in such glowing terms in a review that everyone can read. Thank you my dears for taking the time to post these wonderful comments and ,in doing so, helping us to attract more potential visitors to our fairy grotto cave house. We would be delighted to see you both again one day.It would be just like welcoming old friends.

Malutka's Cave House of Dreams is just that.....it is vivid and captivating when you are there, and when you wake up in the UK, you hold onto the memories for as long as you can.

The cave house is a world apart - a living work of art, with treasures to discover in every nook and cranny, yet comfortable, well equipped and you feel instantly at ease. It is wonderfully decorated, sympathetically restored and arranged very well for a family to stay in. We were blessed with hot, sunny weather, and found the patio garden to be an absolute treat in the evenings (drinking Spanish brandy!) as the garden is filled with scented plants and flowers, has lots of quirky wind-chimes and decorations, and is lit up tastefully with a variety of coloured lightings. The tortoise garden is a fun addition, and Malutka really knows how to care for them, as tortoises require a lot of care and attention.

We loved everything about the Cave House, and Malutka and Colin are helpful, interesting and fun people to talk to, and were very respectful of our privacy.

The highlights for our week: Lake Negratin - a startlingly blue lake set against a rugged red landscape of 'badlands'; Castril - lovely gorge walk; visiting the Alhambra in Granada (easy to do in one day); cave houses in Guadix and the cave house museum in Purellena; la Calahorra castle, stunning scenery everywhere you look; and we were lucky to see various 'penance processions' in Baza and the passion play in Cuevos del Campo.

Tips - a small hire car is helpful, and allow a bit longer to fully explore the area. Food shopping isn't a problem as there is a big Lidl which is open all day, including Sundays. Don't forget to visit Baza itself, as there is a lovely older part of town. (If you have time and have children/are into Spaghetti Westerns, go to Fort Bravo, approx. 1 hour away - see our separate review for that - great day out!)

I think everyone should experience a cave house - and this one is great fun!

“Magical place to stay”
Reviewed September 15, 2013 for a stay in September 2013

So thrilling to arrive and explore this intriguing place where the owners had prepared for us an exciting experience of discovery with lamp- and candle-lit corners to cause us to go 'ooh' and 'ahh'. We were still spotting treasures days later. It is a most fascinating place to stay. Malutka and Colin are the most wonderfully generous hosts (thanks to them we managed without a car). We were in need of quiet recuperation and did very little but were very happy with our books - my daughter up on the top terrace and me down with the tortoises and vines - and long lie-ins. Lovely!

Liked best: The glorious decoration and the terraces
Liked least: Not having full separation between the rooms - fine for us (mum and daughter) but thought 2 couples with children might appreciate just a touch more separation. But the owners have done what they can to make each room private.
