We just came back from Mangenguey and we are already missing it so much! I can't understand the bad reviews... At the beginning I was worried about getting bored and the bad reviews but there is always something to do like visiting the island, kayaking or going with Richard for a walk. He is amazing, very interesting, ecological friendly and I loved the way they built the resort respecting the nature. It's not cheap but is the price for a remote place far from all the noise in the cheap place of Coron city and you have the service of a five star resort.

Stayed at Mangenguey Island from Jan 30th & left on Feb 2nd. If you are looking for downtime with the luxe of what nature has to offer including a scrumptuous meal each time, this is the ultimate place to be. Yes, it is remote, rustic but the beauty, the charm, the total hospitality of Richard, Helena and all the staff that made our stay memorable. I also miss the mascot of the island, Pandac. We wish you well and thanks for the memories!

The island is usually visited by young couples from Europe, Asia and US. Richard (the owner) says that the hotel is self-filtering, because "his guests are always intelligent and polite". We spent evenings together with other visitors havings a dinner, drinking, playing board games, pool and talking. If you dont like international communication - don't go. If you don't like virgin nature (including insects) or want night life and party - don't go. But if you are ready to live on a desert island in peace and harmony with yourself and others - this is an excellent choice. We spent 5 nights on the island and it was not enough.
The service and bar provided by beautiful hostess Sakila was great. We were sick for one day and she hepled a lot. Helena's cuisine was special and sometimes even too much for me. Richard organizes walking trips around the island - it was interesting, he's a great company.
You can use kayaks, fins, snorkel for free. The sea and reef are amazing. The main beach has sun from dawn till dusk. The island itself is gorgeous. I've seen many beaches but this one is really awesome. You can swim around to visit another beaches and to see rocks or walk through the island's forest and climb to view points. Richard and Helena pay a big attention to saving the island and its nature untouched, and that is why Mangengey is just perfect. You dont feel yourself like in 5 stars hotel. It is more like in your friend's house, somewhere in tropical paradise. We talked about our perception with other guests and compared it to El Nido, Coron or Boracay top hotels and we agreed that Mangengey is just the best place in the Philippines!

If you are going for the out-of-the-way very relaxing experience, no mass tourism and good food this is the place to go but there are a few things that are good to know about the island and especially about the couple who run it.

Apart from staying at the main house the rest of the accomodation is rather roustic in a very-close-to-nature kind of way. This is not luxery but considering price and not having to deal with too many other tourists that's ok.

Big draw back is the mentality applied. When you arrive you get handed a piece of paper that talks about how the owners "have chosen to share" the island with you. That is very much how you are treated, more like having been invited than someone actually paying to stay. Additionally you are handed a waiver which is much too strict and clearly shows signs of being written by a non-professional.

The owner couple, Helena and Richard (especially Helena), are perfectionists which you can tell by design etc. The flip side is that questions and comments are usually treated as (negative) criticism which is an attitude you get rather fed up with. If you have an opinion on something it is usually disregarded if it doesn't match with the "religion" of the owners.

Compared with local food, the meals are great (warning for massive amounts of garlic). Prices on drinks and especially excursions are much too high compared with other resorts.

I visited Mangenguey back in 2010 with 5 friends for 3 nights and we had a wonderful time. We left feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. The highlight of the trip perhaps was our hosts, Richard and Helena, who truly care about their guests and their needs. As they run the island, they will make a real effort to cater to any requests that you may have.

Activities around the island are limited, but if you're ok spending your days snorkeling, fishing, hiking, and ending with tasty cocktails, then this is for you. I'd recommend going with a small group of friends as the days are long, and you will probably want company.

Mangenguey is one-of-a-kind. If you are looking for an unspoiled island retreat, a place to truly enjoy rich natural beauty, a very intimate, romantic and quiet vacation (with no children), and excellent food, this is your destination.

The island is beautiful, exceedingly private and quite remote…no jet skis, fast boats or noisy night-life. No cars either. In fact, it’s the only resort on the island, owned and created by gracious hosts Richard and Helena Mander.

We stayed in the suite on the second floor of the main house. The Manders’ sensitivity to traditional design and natural materials create a sense of place with all the comforts of home. Our room was tastefully designed to seamlessly integrate indoors and out. The beach was beautiful and we enjoyed swimming and snorkeling.

Imagine my surprise at being served warm petit pain au chocolat, croissant and even bagels, with butter and cream cheese. Fresh fruit and hot coffee were delicious. Lunch was homemade soups, salad with island greens and home-made dressing, fresh and crusty pan con tomate with charcuterie, and homemade ice-cream for dessert... It’s no wonder the food is good. In their former lives, Helena and Richard ran 3 high-end restaurants, one in Manhattan.

You won’t find anything like this in Palawan. It’s a gem. And ask Richard and Helena to explain their vision for the future if you want your imagination to soar!

Room Tip: Take the suite if you can. It's really cool.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Mangenguey is truly like no other place in the world. It is intimate and private, a destination that blends the incredible beauty of untouched Nature with culture and art. The island is a perfect location to create a new vision of Utopian living and redefined luxury for the twenty-first century. Mangenguey is an exquisite and remote Virgin Island comparable in natural beauty to the best in the world; it is located in the Calamianes archipelago in Northern Palawan, Philippines. It is right at the center of the Coral Triangle, one of the world's richest marine biodiversity zones. Getting There. Mangenguey is 45 minutes away from Manila, Philippines by plane. There are regular daily flights to Busuanga airport via Air Phil Express, Cebu Pacific, or SKYJET.Upon arrival at Busuanga Airport, guests take a thirty-minute drive in an air-conditioned van or private car (with additional charge) that takes them to Coron Town. In Coron, guests board our native banka for an approximately 1-1/2 hour (depending on sea conditions) beautiful scenic journey to the island. Airport transfers are $65/ trip and include land and sea transport. We recommend a minimum stay of three (3) nights for guests traveling from not so distant locations, and a week for guests coming from far away. Food and Beverage: The dining experience on Mangenguey is like no other: fresh sea air to stimulate the appetite, gorgeous views of the ocean, superb cuisine, warm and friendly service, and interesting conversation. Helena's simple and approachable Catalan-inspired cuisine is definitely one of the highlights of the Mangenguey experience. Gathered around the gracious table for communal dining or "al fresco" in the garden, meals in Mangenguey reflect the distinctive character of Helena. Shaped by her Spanish childhood and her years of travelling throughout different continents, combined with her knack for using local ingredients, each meal on Mangenguey is a unique epicurean adventure and pleasure for the senses. All guests are served 3 gourmet meals a day for a fee per person, per day. We accommodate "Special diets" provided advance notice and at an additional charge per day per person. Guests can also enjoy a variety of classic cocktails and a selection of wines, spirits, and beers. A truly luxurious moment on the island is the pre-dinner drinks at the Big House: sip the house champagne or our Signature Cocktails as tantalizing aromas waft from the open-style kitchen while Helena's cooks. Entertainment. Guests can swim and snorkel in the reef, paddle around the island in native bankas, bird watch, or trek through the forest. They can read on the veranda facing the sea, play pool in the Big House, or watch the sunset while sipping champagne and listening to Maria Callas. The adventurous can dive or snorkel in the magnificent house reef or in the turquoise waters surrounding the island. We customize island hoping and diving tours on our comfortable bankas to fit your desires and interests that come complete with gourmet picnics and butler service. Our private diving trips must be booked in advance with our Dive Master. Experience the beautiful reefs and the Japanese wrecks. We can plan a perfect diving experience based on your skills and desires. Private diving courses may also be arranged. ... more   less
