I was trekking 60 miles backpacking and tenting the Norfolk Coast Walk and wanted to treat myself to a night in a Hotel in celebration of completing the walk. I booked the Red Lion through a good deal with booking.com, £149 down from £180 for a standard double inc breakfast. To be perfectly honest when I arrived and looked at the Hotel from the outside I thought to myself ‘Oh my Gawd I’ve made a terrible mistake’. BUT when inside its completely different. its been totally refurbished inside, and my room was amazing. Very comfy double bed, well cleaned throughout, fresh carpet and fittings, huge wardrobe, large TV with Netflix, Kettle-tea-coffee & milk, an honesty basket with Gin & tonic (£7.50)-nuts-chocolates & and bottle of red wine (£19), bath/shower and towelled dressing gown. My Dinner was incredible and so did everyone else’s that wafted passed my table. The Chef deserves full credit, along with the superb staff who were always cheerful and eager to serve, and the quality and standard continued through to breakfast the following morning. When praise is due, I DO NOT hesitate to dish it out - this hotel is exemplary and long may it last. The next phase is obviously the hotel exterior which is looking tired and the old windows to need replacing and I have every confidence that this will be tackled soon. One word to the Management though! As I lay soaking in the bath, I noticed the cursed green mould ‘just’ beginning to show signs on the tile grouting. This needs to be nipped in the bud before it develops, otherwise sure enough some guest will notice and photograph it with their review, and that would be an unfair shame, for this really is a fantastic hotel that’s put so much effort and hard work to make it so. Well Done Red Lion!! Just goes to show, never judge a book by its cover.
