Sunday lunch - impromptu

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jul 31, 2024
Lovely late Sunday lunch with husband in dog friendly area in this hotel which is our local at the end of our street. Service on this occasion was quite hit and miss and sadly our lunch ruined by a rather drunk crowd with young kids running riot round the hotel lobby. That aside the food was its usual excellent quality and the patchy service improved by the appearance of one excellent staff member towards the end of our meal who knows us well.

Please don’t be put off by the external appearance of this hotel. It is much nicer inside. Though the disabled parking wasn’t great.

All the staff were great - friendly and professional. The bedrooms weren’t great and did need updating. However, they were clean and we had a sea view.

8 of us had dinner and it was very good. Breakfast was busy and the staff looked a little stressed. However they kept smiling!!

Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay, our imposing, original and impressive Edwardian building is a delight. We have a disabled parking space at the rear of the hotel, just a short walk to the disabled access point, so we are not sure what wasn't great about that in your opinion. We pride ourselves on exceptional guest experiences so it is great to hear that we delivered that. Your comments on the rooms are surprising, the bedrooms had a full refurbsihment in 2023 creating a restful, quality and contemporary feel to the tradtional bedrooms. All of our rooms have the joy of a sea view. The breakfast team are very proficient in service for a maximum occupancy hotel and are as you say always smiling.

Faded majesty. My single room was small but comfortable, rather overpriced for a one-night B&B (£144). The rooms overlooking the main road between the hotel and the beach were noisy with passing traffic, and my room had truly ancient windows which did not open properly due to the severe age of the tired (Victorian?) woodwork. Breakfast however was very good, delivered quickly. The dining room had a huge water stain on the roof but was otherwise comfortable. The town centre is a pleasant 10 minute walk along the garden paths or you can descend steep steps right to the sandy beach.

Room tip: Find a smaller family-type B&B with a much lower price.

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay, you use the term faded majesty which is surprising. The venue had a full refurbishment in 2022 and 2023 elevating the venue and creating a quality, restful, contemporary and welcoming ambience, but we are sorry that you didn't feel that. You have visited our venue on the seafront during the peak season. We constantly review our prices to ensure that we remain cometitive and value for money compared with similar sea front venues with our facilities. Cromer is not particulary busy at night or in the early morning regardless, but we are sorry if the road disturbed you, perhaps a rural hotel would suit you better. We are very proud that the Grade II charatcerful, original features have been retained but we are sorry if the original sash window caused discomfort, we do provide tower fans. The stain on the dining room was caused by a guest leaving the water running in the room above. It is scheduled to be repaired as soon as possible, due to the historical listing a specialist company has to repair it and we are just waiting for a repair date, again sorry it it offended you. It is such a shame to hear that we were not for you on this occasion.

After years of being a mediocre, pretty old fashioned venue with a decreasing reputation, I couldn’t wait to see the newly renovated and updated Cliftonville Hotel in Cromer.
When I walked in I was immediately hit by the lavish and vintage decor and memorabilia, for example an original 1940s television set.
It has kept its original features but have given the place an incredible update and sophisticated new look that screams ‘book a room’ not just a table.
It was a mega hot day so I fancied a pizza on the newly built terrace… the gentleman who served me was extremely impressive and tentative to my needs and even expressed trying a half and half pizza to cater for my palate.
Sat outside and watched the world go by taking in all the delicious sea air, and seeing young members of families lapping up handcrafted Mocktails and hand stretched cheesy pizzas…. The beer I chose was a cold, refreshingly delightful Spanish pint that looked even better with the sun shining through the glass….. then something happened which even made my hair stand on end… a huge pizza staring at me from a huge silver shinning tray that has obviously been cooked in the perfect pizza oven…. I had Margarita to my left and a Meat Feast to my right… the smell took me back to Rome… my mouth was watering… the perfectly placed chorizo meatballs pinged with audaciousness… the melted Italian cheese screamed with stretched madness…. the tomato ragu reminded me of when I first had bolognese sauce in Bologna …..but for me the most incredible part of this pizza was its obvious hand stretched and homemade dough… someone hasn’t been to Iceland… they’ve been to Naples!
Is it the best pizza I have had in Cromer… no… it’s the best pizza I have had in Norfolk!
I just wish I could’ve stayed the night in one of their beautiful looking newly updated rooms… maybe next time… after 2 pizzas!!

Wow thank you for such a glowing review, we are delighted to hear that you love our new look as much as we do! Our immense sharing pizzas are super popular and a real hit so it is great to hear that you felt that too. Our pizza kitchen is an all year round project and we are looking at the possibility of a delivery service in the autumn/winter, so keep your eyes peeled!

Wow what a nice place to stay, such good value, I cant say anything against the hotel, staff or service.
Don't have a pizza unless you are expecting guests (Joking) its so big I could not finish it!!!
The food was great and the service top rate, the quiet areas in the hotel are great to unwind and have a crafty cocktail.
Location, right on the front and just far enough out of town to be quiet and inspiring for a little walk to the pier.
We will be back

Room tip: Get your car parked and leave it, you don't need it for looking around the area

Attempted to book directly with the hotel by phone could only get the answer phone, left 3 messages, no one ever got back, gave up and phoned several other hotels in Cromer, all full. Went onto booking . com and booked the Cliftonville, paying much more that the hotels advertised rate.
On arrival a queue at reception but no staff on reception, eventually a member of staff from the dinning room came out and booked us in. The room was large and well furnished, clean and bright. Small but adequate bathroom.
Breakfast first morning I chose eggs benedict, it took quite while to arrive and when it did it looked as though it had been thrown on to the plate, it was served on toasted sourdough bread which was over toasted and almost impossible to cut through.
Dinner on night 2 was very good nice staff.
Second breakfast I chose the full english we waited for 35 minutes for it to arrive and when it did it was all overcooked ( I guess it had been sitting on the pass for too long) there were 2 fried eggs but i didn't discover that untill near the end as they were served one on top of the other.
I made a complaint to the manager on booking out and he said he wouldn't charge for anything other than the room, which he did.
Very dissapointed with my stay. Have used the Cliftonville before but would have reservations about doing so again.

Thank you for taking time to feedback despite being disappointed with your stay. We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your room. We endeavour for our reception team to be available, however there may be occasions when the reception team are elsewhere fulfilling the needs of the business, the restaurant team are on hand during these times. but we are very sorry for any inconvenience caused. We have had some issues with messages left not being saved by the phone system, please be assured that it is our policy to respond to all voicemails as soon as we are able and the issue is now resolved by our telecom provider.
It is very disappointing to hear about your breakfast experience as it is such an important part of your stay. Our guests are mornally wowed by the selection and freshness of our breakfasts and we can only apologise that on this ocassion we failed to meet our normal standards. Whilst deducting the charge for you does not make up for the disappointment, it does demonstrate that we do take all feedback seriously.
We sincerely hope that you will reconsider and give us another chance to shine.
